Steven Gerrard nods towards his time at Rangers<\/p>\n
Former boss Steven Gerrard<\/a> joked he was wearing ‘Rangers blue’ during a TV appearance amid rising speculation over an Ibrox return.<\/p>\n The Liverpool icon has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, with the Saudi side battling against relegation from the Pro League.<\/p>\n Before Danny Rohl<\/a> was named Russell Martin’s successor in October last year, Gerrard was in talks with Rangers owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises but walked away from a blockbuster return to the Glasgow giants after several rounds of discussions.<\/p>\n The Liverpool icon earned hero status during his time in the Ibrox dugout after he ended Celtic<\/a>‘s stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. Since then, Gerrard has endured disappointing spells at Aston Villa and in Saudi.<\/p>\n Despite knocking back Rangers, the 45-year-old stated that he wanted a “passionate” crowd<\/a> and the chance to claim silverware in his next job – like he had at Ibrox.<\/p>\n Last week, he strongly hinted a quick-fire decision<\/a> is looming over a return to the dugout – as he admitted he could miss October’s All Star Legends clash between Liverpool and Manchester United in Malaysia.<\/p>\n Rohl is facing major pressure after the season petered out with four defeats from five Premiership post-split fixtures, alongside a public spat with outgoing captain James Tavernier.<\/p>\n The German has already had a vote of confidence from chairman Cavenagh – but speculation has surged again after Gerrard’s appearance on TNT Sports.<\/p>\n The legendary midfielder was on punditry duties as Manchester City overcame Chelsea in the FA Cup final.<\/p>\n After being teased for an Everton-styled blue suit, Gerrard was quick to make a correction: “I just picked the first one I seen, but classic navy – you know what I mean?<\/p>\n Steven Gerrard led Rangers to title glory in 2021(Image: Ian MacNicol\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n “This is a different blue.
