{"id":965560,"date":"2026-05-17T00:28:19","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T00:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/965560\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T00:28:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T00:28:19","slug":"massive-sculpture-at-bristol-harbour-has-a-grim-meaning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/965560\/","title":{"rendered":"Massive sculpture at Bristol Harbour has a grim meaning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Flats overlooking the water had a slightly unusual view today<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_BGS_SG_160526_surfers_result.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Surfers Against Sewage Paddle-Out Protest at Bristol Harbour \" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Surfers Against Sewage Paddle-Out Protest at Bristol Harbour (Image: Bristol Surfers Against Sewage)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A giant inflatable model of the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/warning-ecoli-found-south-bristol-10939576\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">E-coli<\/a> bacteria joined dozens of campaigners in Bristol protesting about the cleanliness of rivers and seas around the West Country today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The huge model, created by <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/gallery\/incredible-sun-artwork-suspended-above-10764710\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Bristol artist Luke Jerram<\/a>, was installed at Baltic Wharf as crowds took to the water to call on the authorities to do more to prevent sewage pollution in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was part of nationwide protests across the country from Cornwall to Scotland. Surfers Against Sewage organised the Paddle-Out Protests, encouraging people to turn up on paddleboards, kayaks and canoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Surfers Against Sewage\u2019s Bristol spokesperson Anna Steele-Perkins said is was <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/sewage-spilled-bristols-waterways-thousands-10131433\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">growing public anger over sewage dumping<\/a>, environmental damage and rising water bills in Britain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cProfit always comes before people and nature. It\u2019s inhumane and I\u2019ve had enough,\u201d she said. \u201cWhether you\u2019re a surfer, paddle-boarder, wild swimmer, or are simply sick of rising water bills, we gathered to demand an end to sewage being dumped into our precious waterways,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Surfers Against Sewage&#8217;s research found that more than 1,200 people reported illness after the UK\u2019s seas, rivers and other waterways, with 74 per cent of cases happening at what is supposed to be \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018excellent\u2019 bathing waters. There have been more than 7,000 reports since SAS\u2019s \u2018Safer Seas and Rivers Service\u2019 app was launched back in 2019, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Water companies allowed raw sewage to flow into England\u2019s rivers and seas more than 300,000 times in 2025 alone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_BGS_SG_160526_surfers_03_result.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Protesters at the Harbourside today\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Protesters at the Harbourside today(Image: Bristol Surfers Against Sewage)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The organisation said the aim of the national protests was to &#8220;put pressure on the government, water companies and the regulators to end to the sewage scandal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In Bristol, the E-coli model was displayed on the water\u2019s edge between the Cottage Inn and Brunel\u2019s SS Great Britain at Baltic Wharf and could be seen from afar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The inflatable installation is five million times larger than the real bacteria, which can cause serious illness when present in contaminated water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Artist Luke regularly takes to the water of the Floating Harbour himself on a kayak, and created the sculpture to go on public display back in 2017 for the KREBS Fest at the University of Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/0_BGS_SG_160526_surfers_02_result.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"One of the placards on display\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">One of the placards on display(Image: Bristol Surfers Against Sewage)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It\u2019s since been on public display around the country, including at the National Museum of Scotland in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Luke said: \u201cImagine the docks in 2030, where the water is transparent and there\u2019s a lido for the public to swim in after work in the summertime, just like they have in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI think we have the opportunity to make this happen for the next generation of people living in Bristol if we act collectively and choose to make it happen.
