{"id":965786,"date":"2026-05-17T03:10:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T03:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/965786\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T03:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T03:10:13","slug":"greece-asks-eu-to-step-in-over-unlawful-fishing-by-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/965786\/","title":{"rendered":"Greece Asks EU To Step In Over &#8216;Unlawful Fishing&#8217; By Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"161\" height=\"41\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/reuters_logo2.jpg\" alt=\"reuters logo\" class=\"wp-image-63170\"\/><\/p>\n<p>ATHENS, May 15 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Greece on Friday asked the European Union to step in and stop what it said was unlawful fishing and violation of maritime law by Turkish fishermen\u00a0in the Aegean Sea in\u00a0the eastern Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>NATO allies and neighbours Greece and Turkey have been at odds for decades over where their continental shelves end and over maritime jurisdiction in the Aegean Sea, including fishing.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping\u00a0Minister Vasilis Kikilias brought up the issue in a meeting with the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, on Friday in Athens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve raised with the Commissioner a major issue for Greece regarding our fishermen and our fisheries and the provocative behaviour of our Turkish neighbours with regards to the unlawful fishing, the non-respect of the law of the sea, and the disputing of our sovereign rights,\u201d Kikilias said,\u00a0without specifying which areas in the Aegean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask the European Union to intervene,\u201d Kikilias said, adding that Greek sea borders were also Europe\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p>Turkish officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Greece has designated restricted fishing areas in the Aegean Sea,\u00a0which runs between the Greek and Turkish mainlands and includes hundreds of Greek and Turkish islands and islets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the restrictions\u00a0have been challenged by Turkey as being out of the country\u2019s jurisdiction.
