Ally McCoist and Steven Gerrard aimed a not-so-subtle dig at Celtic’s<\/a> refereeing controversy during commentary on the FA Cup Final.<\/p>\n

The Rangers<\/a> icons were on co-commentary duty for Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.<\/p>\n

With the score still goalless in the second half, Chelsea had muted appeals for a penalty waved away after Enzo Fernandez’s cross struck the tucked-in arm of City’s Nico O’Reilly.<\/p>\n

As replays rolled, TNT Sports lead commentator Darren Fletcher said: “I’ll tell you something. If you give a penalty for that, we might as well all go home.”<\/p>\n

And McCoist – who had a meltdown over the Hoops’ 95th-minute VAR spotkick award at Fir Park on Wednesday<\/a> – quickly fired back: “Wrong country.”<\/p>\n

The comment sparked laughter in the gantry, with former Rangers boss Gerrard joking: “He couldn’t help himself.”<\/p>\n

McCoist then sarcastically replied: “Sorry about that.”<\/p>\n

But Gerrard backed his sidekick, adding: “I agree with you by the way.”<\/p>\n

It comes after McCoist branded Scottish football a “laughing stock” after Motherwell’s Sam Nicholson was penalised for a handball – with Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the winning goal to keep Celtic’s title dreams alive.<\/p>\n

McCoist let rip and raged: “A horrendous decision that has once again embarrassed Scottish football.”<\/p>\n

Yet despite the mass hysteria and outrage over the contentious incident, it’s believed Willie Collum has backed John Beaton for getting the spot-kick call RIGHT.<\/p>\n

The SFA also released a seething statement on Friday revealing that Beaton is under police surveillance<\/a> following a leak of his personal details online.<\/p>\n
