{"id":966018,"date":"2026-05-17T05:53:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T05:53:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/966018\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T05:53:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T05:53:24","slug":"greens-tackle-divided-nation-with-kindness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/966018\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens tackle divided nation with kindness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Green councillor has reflected on what the party did right in the recent elections, and has spoken on how they might bring the country back together.<\/p>\n<p>After winning 10 seats and 28% of the vote share in Sheffield during the recent local elections, the <a href=\"https:\/\/greenparty.org.uk\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/greenparty.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Party<\/a> have continued to steadily climb the ranks of British politics.<\/p>\n<p>Green Party Councillor Christine Gilligan Kubo, for the Hillsborough ward of Sheffield, said: \u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to gain so many seats \u2013 we worked very hard for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reformparty.uk\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.reformparty.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reform UK<\/a>, however, are also exponentially gaining seats across the country, with 14 councils won in the election, as opposed to the Green Party\u2019s five councils and two mayoralities.<\/p>\n<p>Coun Gilligan Kubo spoke on how the Greens were able to beat Reform by nearly 2,000 votes in Sheffield: \u201cWe work in the wards all year round, so we\u2019re a constant presence, and we try to be responsive.<br \/>\u201cWe\u2019re there, we\u2019re on the streets, and we\u2019re listening to people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Statistics from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/politicsandpolicy\/who-supports-reform-uk-and-who-the-greens\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/politicsandpolicy\/who-supports-reform-uk-and-who-the-greens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LSE British Politics<\/a> show that those most likely to vote for reform are older, working-class voters, with lower levels of education and a strong sense of English identity.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Sheffield takes great pride in its working-class history, the 2021 census showed that the majority of the population still sat within the 20-24 age bracket, which likely factored into the Green\u2019s recent success.<\/p>\n<p>In answer to Reform\u2019s rising popularity, Coun Gilligan Kubo said: \u201cThere is a lack of political understanding in the country generally and, hopefully, being out in Sheffield and as visible as possible will help to address it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A poll by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2026\/04\/08\/divided-britain-more-split-than-ever-new-poll-reveals\/?msockid=2507a8425ab96a2e3348bf1b5b436bbc\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2026\/04\/08\/divided-britain-more-split-than-ever-new-poll-reveals\/?msockid=2507a8425ab96a2e3348bf1b5b436bbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a> revealed that 76% of Brits perceive the nation to be more divided now than 10 years ago, when Brexit was in full swing.<\/p>\n<p>The recent surge in support for both the Greens and Reform highlights the polarisation of the British public, as the two parties have among the most opposing views in UK politics.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking for the Greens, Coun Gilligan Kubo said: \u201cWe like to do politics that\u2019s kind, rather than divisive.
