The Russian Defense Ministry said air defense systems shot down 556 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions during the night of\u00a0May 17.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0the ministry, the drones were intercepted and destroyed between 10:00 p.m. Moscow time on\u00a0May 16 and 7:00 a.m. on\u00a0May 17. The department specified that the aircraft-type UAVs were downed over the Belgorod, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Bryansk, Voronezh, Tula, Smolensk, Pskov, Lipetsk, Tver and Rostov regions, as\u00a0well as\u00a0over Krasnodar Territory, the Moscow region, the Republic of\u00a0Crimea, and the waters of\u00a0the Black and Azov seas.<\/p>\n
Missile alerts were also declared overnight in\u00a0Chuvashia and in\u00a0the Bryansk, Saratov, Oryol, Tula, Leningrad, Lipetsk and Penza regions. In\u00a0addition, a\u00a0drone threat regime had been in\u00a0effect since Saturday evening in\u00a0the Pskov region and Stavropol Territory.<\/p>\n
Moscow was singled out as\u00a0one of\u00a0the main targets. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that since midnight, air defense units had repelled an\u00a0attack by\u00a081 drones heading toward the capital.<\/p>\n
The large-scale raid left 12 people injured in\u00a0Moscow. Among them were construction workers near the entrance to\u00a0the Moscow Oil Refinery. Three residential buildings in\u00a0the city were also damaged.<\/p>\n
In\u00a0the Moscow region, three people were killed: a\u00a0woman in\u00a0Khimki and two men in\u00a0Mytishchi.
