{"id":966280,"date":"2026-05-17T08:55:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T08:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/966280\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T08:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T08:55:15","slug":"they-lost-a-historic-opportunity-ken-loach-laments-your-party-infighting-cannes-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/966280\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018They lost a historic opportunity\u2019: Ken Loach laments Your Party infighting | Cannes film festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ken Loach has accused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/feb\/26\/leadership-corbyn-settled-but-your-party-struggle-relevance-just-begun\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Your Party<\/a> of squandering an opportunity to unite the left in the fight against the far right after the upstart socialist movement founded by the former Labour figures Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/feb\/26\/leadership-corbyn-settled-but-your-party-struggle-relevance-just-begun\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mired in infighting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere was great hope when Jeremy Corbyn and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/zarah-sultana\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zarah Sultana<\/a> joined forces; 800,000 people expressed interest \u2013 that\u2019s three times the size of a political party,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019m afraid some of the behaviours were very poor and they lost a historic opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The British film director and longtime Corbyn ally spoke to the Guardian before an official Cannes film festival screening of <a href=\"https:\/\/player.bfi.org.uk\/subscription\/film\/watch-land-and-freedom-1995-online\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Land and Freedom<\/a> \u2013 31 years after the Spanish civil war drama first premiered on the Croisette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The film follows a British communist who travels to Spain expecting a united anti-fascist struggle, only to encounter bitter ideological divisions between competing leftwing factions \u2013 tensions Loach believes remain deeply relevant today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said: \u201cThe split on the left was very important to explore in the film. It contributed to the defeat in Spain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Loach, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/aug\/14\/director-ken-loach-expelled-labour-party\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expelled from the Labour party in 2021<\/a> after refusing to disavow other removed members, said mainstream political parties had increasingly adopted rhetoric once associated with the far right. \u201cThe Conservative leadership uses the same language as Nigel Farage, and the Labour right responds to that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe people who have nothing are always blamed, and the people who got rich on the system escape. They\u2019re the ones now funding the far right. They fund Trump. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/may\/14\/nigel-farage-5m-gift-crypto-billionaire-brexit-reward\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farage\u2019s \u00a35m<\/a> is just the tip of the iceberg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Loach remains virulently critical of Keir Starmer\u2019s leadership, describing current tensions within the government as \u201ca case of when thieves fall out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s no surprise people have turned against Starmer\u2019s government. He cannot communicate, which is a fatal flaw in a politician. Tony Blair did dreadful things, but he had the gift of being able to communicate with people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere is no relation to the labour movement or the interests of working-class people. They\u2019ll do all they can to keep Andy Burnham out of the running because he\u2019s just slightly to the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Land and Freedom, which received Cannes\u2019 Fipresci international critics prize and the Ecumenical jury prize in 1995, has been restored in 4K and will screen in the festival\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festival-cannes.com\/en\/press\/press-releases\/cinema-de-la-plage-films-on-the-beach-2026\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cin\u00e9ma de la Plage<\/a> strand on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Loach with Jeremy Corbyn in 2019. He has had 15 films in competition and won two Palme d\u2019Ors, for <a href=\"https:\/\/player.bfi.org.uk\/subscription\/film\/watch-the-wind-that-shakes-the-barley-2006-online\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wind That Shakes the Barley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2016\/may\/12\/i-daniel-blake-ken-loachs-welfare-state-polemic-is-blunt-dignified-and-brutally-moving\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I, Daniel Blake<\/a>. His longtime collaborator, the screenwriter Paul Laverty, is a member of this year\u2019s competition jury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinary to be back with this film,\u201d Loach said. \u201cIt\u2019s about the first war against fascism. When we made it, our feeling was that fascism wouldn\u2019t arise again. And now, of course, we face the far right again, but they don\u2019t come in jackboots this time, they come under a different guise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Loach said the themes of the film \u2013 racism, division and economic insecurity \u2013 had become newly urgent across Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe language they use against immigrants, the racist undertones, finding scapegoats while refusing to look at the serious issues that are causing poverty and wars \u2026 they provide someone to blame for the sense of panic and insecurity people feel, they stoke up the hysteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The director criticised fellow film-makers who argue cinema should remain separate from politics, referencing comments made by Wim Wenders during this year\u2019s Berlinale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI was very disappointed to see my friend Wim Wenders say film-makers had to stay out of politics,\u201d Loach said. \u201cThe difficulties people face are determined by the political choices we have available, and the power we have over the political process. So politics is absolutely central to film-making.
