What Burnham and Streeting have said about rejoining the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just days after it suffered a <a data-ylk=\"slk:series of thumping defeats;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/local-elections-results-full-live-003538098.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">series of thumping defeats<\/a> to Nigel Farage\u2019s pro-<a data-ylk=\"slk:Brexit;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brexit\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Brexit<\/a> Reform UK Party in elections across the UK, <a data-ylk=\"slk:Labour;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/labour\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a> is again at loggerheads over Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s culture secretary Lisa Nandy has <a data-ylk=\"slk:hit out at would-be leadership contender Wes Streeting, accusing him of re-opening the \u2018Brexit wars\u2019 within the party.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/bulletin\/news\/labour-streeting-eu-burnham-starmer-b2978122.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">hit out at would-be leadership contender Wes Streeting, accusing him of re-opening the \u2018Brexit wars\u2019 within the party.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here we look at where would-be successors to Sir <a data-ylk=\"slk:Keir Starmer;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Keir Starmer<\/a> stand on the European Union and what they have said in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Wes Streeting<\/p>\n<p>Even as the former health secretary announced he would stand in a Labour leadership contest he made his opening pitch to become prime minister a call for Britain<a data-ylk=\"slk:to rejoin the European Union;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/indy-web-prod.brightsites.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/streeting-labour-leadership-burnham-starmer-live-updates-b2977918.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> to rejoin the European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When it came to Brexit, leaving the EU was a \u201ccatastrophic mistake\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The UK should be ambitious for a new special relationship with the bloc, he added, arguing that Britain\u2019s future lies with Europe \u201cand one day back in\u201d the EU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has left us less wealthy, less powerful, and less in control than at any point since before the Industrial Revolution,&#8221; Mr Streeting said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The biggest economic opportunity we have is on our doorstep. We need a new special relationship with the EU, because Britain&#8217;s future lies with Europe \u2013 and one day back in the European Union,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>However, he made clear that this could only happen if a new mandate was secured, such as at a general election.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Wes Streeting, Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham have all reportedly been touted as potential replacement for Sir Keir (PA) (PA)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_the_independent_us_877\/4144bf8db5f18fbbe20ede1fab085a5c.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wes Streeting, Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham have all reportedly been touted as potential replacement for Sir Keir (PA) (PA)<\/p>\n<p>Andy Burnham<\/p>\n<p>Mr Streeting\u2019s stance on Brexit has put pressure on the leading contender to replace Sir Keir, if there is a contest, <a data-ylk=\"slk:Andy Burnham;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/andy-burnham\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of Greater Manchester wants to be PM, but must first win a seat in Parliament in a crunch by-election in Makerfield, which voted to leave the EU in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, allies of Mr Burnham were reported to have suggested he was not going to be \u201cgoing big on Europe\u201d in his pitch to voters there.<\/p>\n<p>He told last year\u2019s Labour Party conference he wanted the UK to rejoin the bloc, saying, \u201cI hope it happens in my lifetime\u2026 People prosper more when they&#8217;re part of unions. That&#8217;s my belief, and I&#8217;ll say it clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Streeting\u2019s call meant he was asked about Brexit in an interview on Saturday night.
