Limited time offer.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is where every team stacks up on the eve of its European summer.<\/p>\n<p>Some notes on the data below.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/poster-fallback.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The average gap to pole is calculated by averaging the gap of each team\u2019s fastest driver to pole position in each qualifying session for grands prix only. The development rate calculates a trend line between these gaps and extrapolates that into a number representing a gain or loss over six races.<\/p>\n<p>While a useful indicator over an entire season, over six races it\u2019s highly sensitive to outlier results \u2014 for example, Haas\u2019s season-worst qualifying result in Australia, where it was more than two seconds off the pace, gives the impression the team has made massive improvements when really its form has bounced around.<\/p>\n<p>McLaren, inversely, suffered its biggest qualifying defeat of the year in Miami \u2014 albeit by a nonetheless tiny margin \u2014 and this has the effect of giving it what appears to be declining form.<\/p>\n<p><b>PIT TALK PODCAST: Oscar Piastri wins his fourth race in five grands prix to extend his lead atop the drivers championship, and with McLaren scoring its biggest victory yet, is there any hope for anyone else in either title chase?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. McLAREN (246 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 0.015 seconds (1st)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: degraded by 0.061 seconds<\/p>\n<p>McLaren also leads the drivers standings, with Oscar Piastri (131 points) heading teammate Lando Norris (115 points), with a 16-point gap back to Max Verstappen in third.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Pretty much everything. McLaren\u2019s gamble on making big changes to its 2024 title winner has paid off, delivering a car that\u2019s comfortably fastest on Sunday and at a minimum competitive in qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>Oscar Piastri has made a big step forward in consistency to lead the standings, shading his more experienced teammate Lando Norris, forming the most potent driver line-up in the sport today.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve delivered the team a hefty 105-point advantage in the constructors championship after just six rounds, putting the team in a strong position to claim both championships.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The MCL39 is formidable in race trim, but both drivers have reported difficult in accessing its speed in qualifying. Despite winning every race but one, Norris and Piastri have claimed only half the season\u2019s pole positions.<\/p>\n<p>While part of the story is that McLaren\u2019s advantage on race pace just doesn\u2019t translate to a qualifying lap, more relevant that it\u2019s tricky and unpredictable to drive at 100 per cent of the limit in Q3. It\u2019s the drivers constantly vulnerable to Verstappen and even occasionally George Russell.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The FIA will crack down on flexible front wings at the Spanish Grand Prix at the end of the month, and some teams \u2014 Red Bull Racing in particular \u2014 are hopeful the rule change could clip McLaren\u2019s wings. For what it\u2019s worth, McLaren says it isn\u2019t expecting any deleterious effects from the change.<\/p>\n<p>The team is also braced for Piastri and Norris\u2019s first crash as both chase their maiden championship in what will be a strenuous test for management.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A+. MERCEDES (141 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 0.203 seconds (3rd)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 0.415 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Excellent consistency has George Russell (93 points) fourth in the standings, while rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli (48 points) has performed solidly to sit sixth ahead of predecessor Lewis Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mercedes has finally delivered a predictable car at the fourth time of asking, with the W16 a consistent performer particularly in the hands of George Russell, who\u2019s qualified and finished no lower than fifth all season, including one front-row start and four podiums.<\/p>\n<p>Rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli has already proved his rushed debut was a good call by team boss Toto Wolff. He\u2019s been solid and dependable, and while he\u2019s lacked Russell\u2019s race pace, Miami demonstrated that the speed is in there and it\u2019s just a matter of unlocking it.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mercedes is still being beaten \u2014 and comfortably \u2014 by customer team McLaren, which is proving the German marque\u2019s power unit is capable of winning races and contending for the championship. Considering just a few years ago Mercedes was dominating the sport \u2014 and McLaren was stuck perpetually in the midfield \u2014 it must give Mercedes considerably pause for thought ahead of next year\u2019s rule changes.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Both Russell and Antonelli are unsigned heading into 2026, and while the driver market is limited, Mercedes\u2019s seats could end up being pivotal in which drivers do move. Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner has already reportedly opened talks with Russell as a safety net should Verstappen walk out of the team. On the other hand, Wolff has long coveted Verstappen and could find the Dutchman is finally on the market, potentially forcing him to grapple with disrupting his long-term line-up.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>B: The team has improved enough to potentially pinch a pole or victory, though it\u2019s still being shown up by one of its customers.<\/p>\n<p>3 in a row! Piastri dominates in Miami | 03:27<\/p>\n<p><b>3. RED BULL RACING (105 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 0.190 seconds (2nd)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 0.385 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Max Verstappen (99 points) continues to carry this team almost single-handedly from third on the title table and 32 points off the lead, while Yuki Tsunoda (6 points) has scored in just two grands prix with the team to sit 11th.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The RB21 is clearly fundamentally quick, as Max Verstappen has proved in qualifying with his three poles to date. In the specific circumstances of the Japanese Grand Prix, that was enough to win a race, and the Dutchman could have made it an unlikely two had he got a better start in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Verstappen has made the difference in race conditions otherwise, taking home two further second-place trophies despite his car being of little chop over a stint, underlining his importance to the team.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The RB21 is still pretty much as difficult and unpredictable as last year\u2019s car. The team talked a good game of having understood its problems late last season, but Verstappen has made clear his dissatisfaction with the car that\u2019s been delivered to him, and Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko has expressed genuine concern it could be enough to push the four-time champion out of the team.<\/p>\n<p>The car has also made a mockery of Red Bull Racing\u2019s driver decisions, with Liam Lawson turfed after only two races \u2014 after the team paid off Sergio P\u00e9rez to dump him during the off-season \u2014 and Yuki Tsunoda having been outscored 6-63 in his four races with the team.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A Verstappen walkout would be a colossal blow to a team that already feels like it\u2019s on the rocks. There are plenty of rumours about the circumstances in which that could come about. One suggestion is he needs to be outside the top two in the championship \u2014 he\u2019s third. Another is that Red Bull Racing must be outside the top three on the teams standings \u2014 it\u2019s third with an 11-point buffer to Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>C: It talked a good game, but it\u2019s yet to prove it\u2019s understood where its development program has gone wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Crashes galore at chaotic French GP! | 00:50<\/p>\n<p><b>4. FERRARI (94 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 0.407 seconds (4th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 0.090 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Charles Leclerc (53 points) is fifth but already 78 points off the title lead and 40 points behind the next-best Russell, while struggles for Lewis Hamilton (41 points) sees him two places and 12 points further back.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Lewis Hamilton\u2019s sprint victory in China was a brief glimpse into the magic this signing could conjure \u2014 the greatest of all time racing for and winning with the greatest of all time. The worth and value of Hamilton-Ferrari shouldn\u2019t be underestimated even amid struggles from both team and driver.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Most things. Ferrari ended last season with the fastest car and missed out on the championship by just 14 points. It also made some gambles on changes for 2025, but unlike McLaren, they so far haven\u2019t paid off, and the team is already a whopping 152 points off the title lead.<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton hasn\u2019t fired despite his sprint victory and has become increasingly despondent about ever gelling with this car \u2014 though he was notably more upbeat after matching Charles Leclerc in Miami \u2014 piling yet more unwanted and unhelpful pressure on a team that could use some breathing space.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This weekend\u2019s first of two races in Italy will surely see Ferrari introduce upgrades, and the team hope the next tranche of parts will solve the problems that have slowed its car since China. If there\u2019s no improvements \u2014 and if Spain\u2019s crackdown on front wings does nothing to change the pecking order \u2014 Ferrari will have to manage expectations for a long season ahead of next year\u2019s rules reset.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>D: There was genuine hope for a Ferrari title this year, but so far it\u2019s spectacularly failed to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Supercars shocker: 0.05s photo finish! | 00:50<\/p>\n<p><b>5. WILLIAMS (37 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 0.678 seconds (5th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 0.353 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Alex Albon (30 points) leads the way after scoring in every grand prix but one, while a tougher start to the season for Carlos Sainz (7 points) has him markedly further down in the standings.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>James Vowles has talked a lot about his tenure as team principal about preparing Williams for 2026, not for this rules set, and the team\u2019s competitive 2025 car has been testament to those improved processes bearing early fruit. Williams is a regular top-10 contender and can genuinely hope to finish fifth, which would be its best finish since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Albon is a big part of that, scoring in every grand prix but one, while Carlos Sainz is finally starting to show his speed after a longer than expected post-Ferrari adjustment. <\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Growing pains are inevitable if Williams is to move up the order, and there was a glimpse at those in Miami, where Sainz and Alex Albon battled damagingly for position apparently contrary to team orders.<\/p>\n<p>Sainz has also taken longer than expected to get himself up to speed with the car, and while he\u2019s outqualified Albon at the last three grands prix, he\u2019s yet to score meaningfully, leaving the team open to challenges for position from further back in the midfield.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Vowles has been open about switching focus almost immediately to preparing the 2026 car in the hope of capitalising on the sweeping new rules to return Williams to the front. It\u2019s expected to leave the team vulnerably as the season wears on to any big development jumps from rivals in the fight for lucrative fifth on the championship table, even if it\u2019s for the greater good.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>B+: While its finishing position is far from certain, Williams has so far looked like a team that\u2019s finally pulling itself together.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Marquez breaks all-time lap record! | 01:08<\/p>\n<p><b>6. HAAS (20 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 1.230 seconds (9th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 1.224 seconds<\/p>\n<p>A bountiful Chinese Grand Prix is responsible for more than half the score of Esteban Ocon (14 points), while rookie Oliver Bearman (6 points) has been dependable after his first-round crashes.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In a super-tight midfield, Haas has capitalised on the chances presented to it to score. Its 14-point haul in China is the bedrock of its sixth place on the championship table and is the highest one-weekend score of any midfield team so far this season.<\/p>\n<p>All-new driver line-ups are always a risk, but Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon have so far got along well and have been complementary on track, with one or the other inevitably getting close to the car\u2019s potential in any given session.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The car have been extremely peaky. The team has made it into Q3 twice, including in Miami last time out, but three times this year it\u2019s lapped more than a second off the pace \u2014 and two of those has been more than 1.75 seconds off pole.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for the drivers. Taking Miami as an example again, while Ocon qualified a season-best ninth, Bearman was knocked out in 20th.<\/p>\n<p>Consistency matters in the midfield, and Haas is leaving too many chances on the table.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While Haas looks relatively comfortable in sixth now, it\u2019ll have trouble hanging onto that position with Alpine and even Racing Bulls behind it. Ayao Komatsu has said he intends to devote some resources to 2025 development this season to keep up, but that brings with it its own tricky strategic questions about the team\u2019s 2026 performance expectations.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>B: Haas is tracking better than it was last year but it\u2019s unclear whether it can keep it up.<\/p>\n<p>Waters pit leads to &#8216;INSANE&#8217; battle | 01:05<\/p>\n<p><b>7. ASTON MARTIN (14 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 1.226 seconds (8th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: degraded by 0.174 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably Lance Stroll (14 points) leads the way for the green team well ahead of a luckless Fernando Alonso (0 points) as possibly the only positive note for team owner Lawrence Stroll.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Aston Martin has been the most efficient scorer when chaos reigns. In Australia it picked up points in the treacherous mixed-weather conditions. In China it snuck into the points when three drivers ahead were disqualified. In Miami it again made the most of the rain to score.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably it\u2019s been Lance Stroll who\u2019s managed all of that scoring, which must be good news, even in this disappointing season, for a team owned by his father, Lawrence Stroll.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The car is woeful \u2014 in fact it might be the least competitive car the team\u2019s built in this regulatory era. It\u2019s been lucky to score on each occasion it\u2019s finished in the points and last time out in Miami was so slow that both drivers failed to escape Q1. It\u2019s the only team other than Sauber yet to make a Q3 appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The car is also clearly difficult to drive, having been developed down a cul-de-sac, as evidence by Fernando Alonso\u2019s unusual solo spin in Miami last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Keeping morale up will be crucial, with Alonso already warning the team to expect to go scoreless at most races this season. While this team has spent big on preparing for 2026, a brand as big as \u2014 and with as big ambitions as \u2014 Aston Martin can\u2019t spend the entire year kicking around at the back of the field.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>F: There\u2019s too much talent in this team to be performing this poorly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Have a tea break while you&#8217;re at it!&#8221; | 02:05<\/p>\n<p><b>8. RACING BULLS (8 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 1.053 seconds (7th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: degraded by 0.935 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Isack Hadjar (5 points) has looked quick from the off and has so far had the measure of new teammate Liam Lawson (0 points), though the Kiwi is in improving form after being dumped by Red Bull Racing.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Isack Hadjar has been a revelation in the Red Bull junior seat, performing far more strongly, especially over a single lap, than anyone appears to have genuinely expected. He\u2019s also proved himself adept in race conditions too, showing almost none of the aggro he became known for via his radio outbursts in the junior formulae.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a bittersweet positive to see Yuki Tsunoda graduate to Red Bull Racing, having backed the Japanese ace strongly even when RBR appeared to have no interest in him.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Racing Bulls now has effectively an all-new and all-rookie line-up this season after losing Tsunoda to Red Bull Racing. It\u2019s got a car into Q3 just once since Tsunoda left and has looked like far less a formidable force in the midfield than it had appeared in the opening two rounds.<\/p>\n<p>Liam Lawson hasn\u2019t looked like his punchy old self since returning, through there have been signs in recent races that the Kiwi is beginning to rediscover some form after a bruising start to full-time life.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Restoring Lawson to full competitiveness is a critical mission for the team not only for its points haul but to avoid being forced into another driver churn at the end of the year if he can\u2019t live up to expectations he generated himself over the last two seasons. It will also be critical to Hadjar\u2019s ongoing development by giving him another driver to measure himself against.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>C+: It\u2019s doing about as well as it ever expects to be doing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;If I don&#8217;t go for it people complain&#8217; | 01:05<\/p>\n<p><b>9. ALPINE (7 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 0.860 seconds (6th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 0.416 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Pierre Gasly (7 points) has seized Alpine\u2019s few chances to score this season, while Jack Doohan (0 points) has lost his drive, at least temporarily, in a bizarre bit of driver management from F1\u2019s most chaotic team.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The car has started in much better shape than last year and has cracked Q3 at half the grands prix so far. Pierre Gasly took home a crucial six points in Bahrain on one of those untouchable Gasly weekends, which will have been a big boost for morale even as the team languishes ninth on the title table.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>F1\u2019s chief chaos agent is undefeated. Flavio Briatore has been exerting greater influence on the team from the executive suite even before the remarkable exit of Oliver Oakes this week. That\u2019s led to the team ditching its homegrown rookie, Jack Doohan, just six races into the season in favour of the cashed-up \u2014 and undeniably talented \u2014 Franco Colapinto.<\/p>\n<p>Except Colapinto will get just five races to prove himself, at which point the team will consider another rotation, perhaps with Doohan or another reserve driver or someone else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Briatore says the evaluation is part of 2026 preparations, but from the outside it looks like a team in search of meaning.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Integrating Franco Colapinto will now become an urgent matter to ensure Alpine\u2019s slow and steady progress this year can continue uninterrupted. The Argentine proved last year he\u2019s a capable scorer, but he also proved liable to crash \u2014 and crash big \u2014 when under pressure. Alpine will have to avoid that at all costs to come away from this game of musical chairs looking vaguely respectable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grad<\/b><b>e<\/b><\/p>\n<p>D: There are signs of potential, but the team has again set itself two steps back.<\/p>\n<p>Norris gets testy after Miami Grand Prix | 02:16<\/p>\n<p><b>10. SAUBER (6 POINTS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Average gap to pole<\/b>: 1.443 seconds (10th)<\/p>\n<p><b>Development rate<\/b>: improved by 0.228 seconds<\/p>\n<p>Years of experience helped Nico H\u00fclkenberg (6 points) to Sauber\u2019s only score this season in treacherous Melbourne, while rookie teammate Gabriel Bortoleto (0 points) has been decent in indecent machinery.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone right<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sauber might have only once chance to score this season, and it grabbed it with both hands in Australia, with Nico H\u00fclkenberg taking home six points in the heavy weather.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel Bortoleto has been a dependable performer in his first full-time season in substandard machinery.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s gone wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Despite team boss Mattia Binotto declaring the team must improve this year to bounce in 2026, the car is yet to appear as any kind of significant improvement this year \u2014 in fact on average it\u2019s further from pole in 2025 than it was in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The broader Audi project also appears troubled, with yet another change in management announced last week, with the team jettisoning its engine chief in the face of ongoing rumours the brand\u2019s first F1 power unit is behind the curve.<\/p>\n<p><b>What challenges lie ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While Audi will work hard to present 2026 as a completely clean break, the credibility of that claim will depend at least in part on Sauber\u2019s struggles this year.
