{"id":967294,"date":"2026-05-17T20:29:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T20:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/967294\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T20:29:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T20:29:22","slug":"london-mayor-criticises-plan-for-north-of-england-olympics-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/967294\/","title":{"rendered":"London mayor criticises plan for north of England Olympics bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ministers announced on Sunday they would carry out an assessment which could inform a bid for the Olympics and Paralympics in the 2040s.<\/p>\n<p>The strategic assessment by UK Sport will examine the costs, the socio-economic benefits to the North, and the bid\u2019s chance of success.<\/p>\n<p>But a spokesperson for Sir Sadiq hit out at the plans, and said it would be a \u201cmissed opportunity\u201d to exclude London from a future bid.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2.80995119.jpg\" alt=\"Rachel Reeves and Lisa Nandy backed the idea (PA)\" data-title=\"Rachel Reeves launches Better Futures Fund\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Archive\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Archive\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Anthony Devlin\" data-usage-terms=\"\"  \/>Rachel Reeves and Lisa Nandy backed the idea (PA)<\/p>\n<p>The capital hosted the last Olympics to be held in the UK, in 2012. During those games some events, including sailing, rowing, and cycling, were held outside Greater London.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: \u201cLondon is the sporting capital of the world and the mayor has openly expressed his ambition for the capital to be part of a future Olympic and Paralympic Games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadiq believes that a potential country-wide bid, using all the assets we have in the UK, including the publicly-owned London Stadium would deliver the very best possible Olympics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing London\u2019s existing world-class infrastructure would help deliver the greenest and most sustainable Games, as well as unlocking huge economic growth both here in London and around the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot including the capital in an Olympics bid would be a missed opportunity, and mean our country fails to unleash the full benefits of a UK-wide games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plans were earlier hailed by two ministers whose constituencies are in the North: Culture Secretary and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy, and Chancellor Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West and Pudsey.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Nandy said the North had for \u201ctoo long\u201d been \u201ctold the Olympics is simply too big and too important to be hosted in the North\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cNot anymore. It\u2019s time the Olympics came north and we showed what we can offer to the world.
