(Supplied: Invasive Species Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m confident the authorities, with the eradication work that&#8217;s going on for deer generally in South Australia will get on top of this, but it does highlight just how significant the risk is,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Farm leakage concern<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Mr Gough said the sighting highlighted the problem of leakage from deer farm operations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;This is something that shouldn&#8217;t be a problem at all because we shouldn&#8217;t be having elk farms and other deer farms in South Australia,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-17\/sa-deer-eradication-program-aerial-culling-reduces-population\/105763068\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SA halves feral deer population<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">South Australia has ramped up its feral deer aerial culling program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s no need for it. There&#8217;s not really a particular market for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Department of Primary Industries and Regions principal biosecurity officer for pest animals Brad Page said earlier changes to tagging and fencing requirements should be enough to prevent significant escapes from deer farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What has happened in 2019 is the regulations around farming were tightened up significantly,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we&#8217;re looking at here is the result of historic farms that allowed deer to escape or accidentally allowed deer to escape or there might have been intentional illegal releases of deer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Any farmed deer found outside containment can be traced through the updated tagging system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That instantly triggers an inspection, a very close inspection of the farm from where it came,&#8221; Mr Page said.<\/p>\n<p>Industry says escapes are limited<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Deer Industry Association of Australia vice-president Milton Stevens,\u00a0who operates a deer farm on South Australia&#8217;s Eyre Peninsula, said escapes from deer farms would be minimal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re a herd animal; where there are other deer they&#8217;ll congregate, which would tend to point the finger at the farm for leakage, but the feral herds that were already established in the state have been drawn to those deer farms,&#8221; Mr Stevens said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large amount of male deer in a paddock\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/7969c9d8d30e8334a6de2192697b94a9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Some deer farms in Australia harvest for velvet or meat. (ABC South East SA: Elsie Adamo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re a valuable asset \u2026 we&#8217;re not going to let them go willingly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are 48 deer farms across South Australia, and the report suggests most leakage is linked to 13 specific deer farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Stevens said he would not want to see any of them pushed out of business by the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said velvet, which covers deer antlers and is <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2023-10-23\/ardno-park-deer-china-demand-velvet-driving-genetic-innovation\/103005622\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103005622\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">harvested and processed into powders, sprays, or extracts<\/a>, had been a very handy adjunct to the farming.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s one of the major sides of our farming operation here.
