We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 eRQajs\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bald-eagle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bald eagle<\/a> hatchlings have been spotted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/chicago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago<\/a> park, marking what city officials believe is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/raptors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raptors<\/a>&#8216; first successful wild breeding in the Windy City in more than a century.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Park District officials announced the significant discovery last week, following observations of nesting activity that began in February in Park 597, situated along the Calumet River on the city&#8217;s Southeast Side. <\/p>\n<p>The first eaglet was sighted on 28 April, with a second confirmed on 7 May.<\/p>\n<p>Irene Tostado, a spokesperson for the park district, noted that the young raptors appear to be two to three weeks old. The initial discovery of an eaglet was made by Pat Pearson and her husband, Steve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started looking around, and lo and behold, this little fuzzy head sticks up with a big beak and we were just ecstatic. Patty actually broke into tears. It was really overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Habitat degradation and insecticide contamination of food sources decimated the bald eagle population in the second half of the 20th century, but the bird has made a dramatic comeback over the last 40 years. <\/p>\n<p>The bald eagle \u2014 the official national bird of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/united-states\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a> \u2014 was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007. <\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re not an uncommon sight in the Chicago area.
