Once complete, vehicles will drive through the box, while trains travel above.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"HS2 engineers installed a 130-metre long steel bridge over the Grand Union Canal\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/260307_LongholeViaductLaunch_BBV_016jfif.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"HS2 engineers installed a 130-metre long steel bridge over the Grand Union Canal\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">HS2 engineers installed a 130-metre long steel bridge over the Grand Union Canal<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The roof deck will be constructed over four weekend closures, allowing engineers to install 175 individual beams, each weighing between 56 and 92-tonnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The giant beams, which have been manufactured off-site in Leicestershire, will be lifted into place using a 300-tonne crawler crane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">At the same time, engineers in nearby Water Orton will be preparing to extend two single-track viaducts that will carry high-speed trains into Birmingham Curzon Street and the rolling stock depot at Washwood Heath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Already at 1,200 metres long, the team will use a different construction technique to build the remaining 135-metre sections of the Water Orton 1 and 2 viaducts that will bridge the gap between the piers either side of the motorway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE : <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/hs2-trains-could-travel-reduced-33646996\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">HS2 trains could travel at reduced speeds to cut &#8216;spiralling costs&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Instead of continuing with the cantilever construction method, the viaducts will be prefabricated in sections near the carriageway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They will be moved into position using self-propelled modular transporters and locked into place above the piers. West, which required just one weekend motorway closure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">That weekend closure will start at 9pm on Friday, August 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">There will be one final weekend closure in October or November at a date to be confirmed with the parapets installation for the Water Orton viaducts<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" for the works, said: \u201cThe progress we\u2019re making on the viaducts and structures next to the M6 and the M42 is already clear to see, and over the next six months, we\u2019ll start bridging the gaps above the carriageways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a huge team effort to condense this vast programme of work into just six weekend closures, and I\u2019d like to thank all our partners for their co-operation and support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSafety will always be our number one priority, which is why we need to divert traffic away from the carriageway while we conduct these vital works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">HS2 Ltd said there was still a \u2018vast disruption for those who use our roads so we welcome the measures being taken by HS2 and their partners to reduce the impact of this huge infrastructure project on road users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe recognise there will, inevitably, be some disruption during these weekend
