In an \u201cimportant<\/a>\u201d update last week, Microsoft confirmed that the Secure Boot certificate expiration that starts in June will affect \u201cmost Windows devices.” To avoid disruption, the company says \u201ctake action to update certificates in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n Affected PC owners are told a”new \u2018SecureBoot\u2019 folder created by Windows 11\u2019s May 2026 Update is expected behavior for Secure Boot certificates update and not a known issue.\u201dPer Windows Latest<\/a>, you don\u2019t need to delete it, but you do need to “reboot your PC once or twice to finish applying the changes.\u201d<\/p>\n ForbesGoogle\u2019s Android Upgrade\u2014Why You Need A New Phone In 2026By Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n Microsoft says failing to install the latest Windows update, which should refresh your Secure Boot certificates, \u201cmight affect the ability of certain personal and business devices to boot securely if not updated in time.\u201d After you update, it\u2019s likely that your PC will undergo a “one time restart<\/a>” to load new certificates.<\/p>\n In a separate warning<\/a>, Microsoft warns problems \u201ccould occur as early as June.” If a security update \u201ccannot be delivered to your device\u2019s current boot configuration,” because your PC \u201chas not yet received the updated certificate,\u201d you will see a \u201cSecure Boot badge change to a red stop icon\u201d in the Windows Security app.<\/p>\n Microsoft issued its latest update on May 12. It was then refreshed 24 hours later to add its \u201cSecure Boot release note.\u201d But the update was changed again on May 15, with a warning that this critical update may “fail to install<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n That gives Windows users a dilemma \u2014 given the need to ensure the update has been installed on PCs by June 1. Microsoft says the workaround for most users is likely a restart, albeit this will rollback the update. It\u2019s unclear what this means for Secure Boot certificates that are wrapped into the software download.<\/p>\n There is a more nuanced Secure Boot warning in this week\u2019s update as well. \u201cWith this update,\u201d Microsoft says, \u201cWindows quality updates include additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates.\u201d<\/p>\n Not the clearest language for any worried users. And not helped by a cryptic warning that \u201cdevices receive the new certificates only after demonstrating sufficient successful update signals, maintaining a controlled and phased rollout.”<\/p>\n We will not know how many PCs are affected by this for some time.<\/p>\n
