{"id":978277,"date":"2026-05-22T18:18:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/978277\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T18:18:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:18:25","slug":"fountain-park-wetherspoons-plans-scrapped-for-commercial-reasons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/978277\/","title":{"rendered":"Fountain Park Wetherspoons plans scrapped for &#8220;commercial reasons&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A PLANNED new Wetherspoons pub in Edinburgh\u2019s busy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fountainpark.co.uk\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Fountain Park<\/a>\u00a0has been scrapped after question marks emerged about the site\u2019s commercial viability.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wetherspoons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J D Wetherspoon<\/a>\u00a0abandoned plans to take over the site of the well-known McCowan\u2019s Brewhouse, which closed in 2024, at the eleventh hour, after a licence had been acquired and planning applications lodged.<\/p>\n<p>McCowan\u2019s Brewhouse was popular with students due to its proximity to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/tag\/edinburgh-napier\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2110\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh Napier\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Bainfield halls of residence.<\/p>\n<p>The decision means that the site, which has been unoccupied for almost two years, will continue to sit vacant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-22-at-16.39.49-scaled.png?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"411\" width=\"696\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-22-at-16.39.49-1024x605.png\" alt=\"The former site of McCowan's Brewhouse (above) has sat vacant for nearly two years\" class=\"wp-image-1266481\"\/><\/a>The former site of McCowan\u2019s Brewhouse (above) has sat vacant for nearly two years<\/p>\n<p>Wetherspoons purchased the site last year and had obtained a licence to serve alcohol, but a building warrant was yet to be granted.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking today, a spokesman for Wetherspoons said: \u201cWetherspoon no longer has a legal interest in the site. It will not be developing a pub there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When pressed on why the site was being abandoned, he said simply that it was a \u201ccommercial decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme was far enough along that a planning application was submitted to erect new signage and hoardings, with attached schematics suggesting the pub would be called the \u201cNorris &amp; Parmelee\u201d, after a pair of 19th century American rubber magnates who manufactured wellington boots in Fountainbridge.<\/p>\n<p>These plans \u2013 submitted by SR Signs \u2013 were lodged on Monday this week, but will now be withdrawn.
