Credit: Stock<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ancient genomes from northwest Europe show that farming, foraging, migration, and marriage shaped prehistory in ways far more complex than earlier models suggested.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When ancient DNA research began drawing major attention a little over a decade ago, many geneticists came to believe that earlier ideas about how modern humans populated Europe needed to be reconsidered. The story was simpler than anyone was expecting: Europe was settled in just three massive migrations from the east.<\/p>\n<p>The first arrivals were hunter-gatherers, who reached Europe more than 40,000 years ago. Later, after 9,000 years ago, farming populations from Anatolia spread across the continent during the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/topics\/neolithic-period-128419\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neolithic age<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A final major movement began around 5,000 years ago, when the Corded Ware people expanded from the Russian steppe and helped usher in the European Bronze Age. Their name comes from the cord-shaped impressions found in their pottery, and they carried a genetic profile that had previously been largely absent across Europe. Most people living in Europe today carry ancestry from all three groups.<\/p>\n<p>That picture, however, was always an oversimplification. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10111-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new paper<\/a>, produced with colleagues from the US and across Europe, has highlighted some of the more complex interactions between ancient populations that took place in north-west Europe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Excavating-Ancient-DNA-From-Belgium-and-the-Netherlands.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-520624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Excavating-Ancient-DNA-From-Belgium-and-the-Netherlands-777x439.jpg\" alt=\"Excavating Ancient DNA From Belgium and the Netherlands\" width=\"777\" height=\"439\"  \/><\/a>The researchers analyzed genetic material from remains found at excavations across Belgium and the Netherlands. Credit: Monika Knul<\/p>\n<p>Our research untangles the origins of prehistoric populations across Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as identifying the source population for a migration into Britain during the late Neolithic that seems to have led to a 90% replacement of Britain\u2019s Neolithic farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient DNA research already suggested a much more nuanced picture. For example, when early Neolithic farmers first moved into Europe, they interacted little with the local hunter-gatherer people. As a result, although they now lived far from their homeland, their genomes still resembled those of their ancestors from Anatolia.<\/p>\n<p>But by 1,000\u20132,000 years later, they had absorbed significant local ancestry. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature14317\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hunter-gatherer ancestry swelled<\/a> from only 10% to 30\u201340% in some regions. Clearly, the hunter-gatherers had not vanished as the farmers expanded.<\/p>\n<p>Northern wetlands<\/p>\n<p>The new research takes us even further from the simple picture. Almost a decade ago, our research group at the University of Huddersfield began a collaboration with paleoecologist Professor John Stewart from Bournemouth University and archaeologists at the Universit\u00e9 de Li\u00e8ge, Belgium. We analyzed the genomes of Neolithic human remains excavated along the River Meuse in Belgium, dating to around 5,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>This work became part of a larger project, led by Professor David Reich and Dr. I\u00f1igo Olalde at Harvard University, involving geneticists and archaeologists from across western Europe. This widened the focus to further sites around the Lower Rhine\u2013Meuse area\u2014wetlands and coastal areas as well as rivers\u2014spanning the late hunter-gatherer cultures to the Bronze Age.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Hunter-Gatherer-Ancestry-Across-Europe.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-520623\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Hunter-Gatherer-Ancestry-Across-Europe-777x499.jpg\" alt=\"Hunter Gatherer Ancestry Across Europe\" width=\"777\" height=\"499\"  \/><\/a>Hunter-gatherer ancestry in populations across Europe between 4,500BC and 2,500BC. Credit: Nature \/ University of Huddersfield<\/p>\n<p>The fertile soils south of the Rhine-Meuse wetlands had attracted pioneer Neolithic farmer-colonists as early as 5,500BC. However, the rich resources of the northern wetlands were more suited to the lifestyle practiced by hunter-gatherers. Even so, the results, generated by our research student, Alessandro Fichera, in collaboration with Harvard, came as a big surprise.<\/p>\n<p>The genomes of people from later Neolithic times in Belgium carried at least 50% local hunter-gatherer ancestry, alongside the expected Anatolian farmer ancestry. Discussing these results with our collaborators led to a \u201ceureka\u201d moment: the same pattern appeared at other sites situated in similarly water-rich environments across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, many of the earlier Neolithic Dutch samples from further north \u2013 such as the Swifterbant culture, well-known for maintaining a hunter-gatherer economy alongside some adoption of agriculture \u2013 carried close to 100% hunter-gatherer ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s role in the spread of farming<\/p>\n<p>We then compared the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA, which track the male and female lines of descent, respectively. The Y chromosomes in the Belgian remains were all characteristic of hunter-gatherers, but three-quarters of the mitochondrial DNA lineages had come from Neolithic farmers living further south. The implication was clear: farming know-how had been imported into the \u201cwaterworld\u201d hunter-gatherer communities by women.<\/p>\n<p>Our findings support a version of the \u201cfrontier mobility\u201d or \u201cavailability\u201d model for the spread of the Neolithic, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.uni-lj.si\/DocumentaPraehistorica\/article\/view\/28.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed by archaeologists<\/a> Marek Zvelebil and Peter Rowley-Conwy in the 1980s. They envisioned a contact zone between pioneer farming groups arriving by \u201cleapfrog colonization\u201d and hunter-gatherer areas.<\/p>\n<p>In the model, the \u201cavailability\u201d phase entailed contact and small-scale movements across the frontier, with trading relationships and marriage alliances, for example, forming gradually. This would be followed by a \u201csubstitution\u201d phase where farming develops alongside foraging in the hunter-gatherer area, and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlypublications.universiteitleiden.nl\/handle\/1887\/22968\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eventually a \u201cconsolidation\u201d phase<\/a>, when farming predominates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Pottery-Made-by-the-Bell-Beaker-People.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-520621\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Pottery-Made-by-the-Bell-Beaker-People-777x314.jpg\" alt=\"Pottery Made by the Bell Beaker People\" width=\"777\" height=\"314\"  \/><\/a>Pottery made by the Bell Beaker people, who created the bronze age of central Europe. Credit: Alfons \u00c5berg, CC BY-SA<\/p>\n<p>Our results suggest that the frontier was much more permeable to women than it was to men, and that it may have been the marriage of Neolithic women into the forager communities that eventually helped the hunter-gatherers to adopt farming full-time. After all, because of the predominance of farming across Europe, the likely alternative long-term was extinction.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this kind of model might also apply to other parts of Europe, where we lack evidence for how the increased hunter-gatherer ancestry in the later Neolithic came about. In any case, the fact that, here, the \u201cmore advanced\u201d farming women married into hunter-gatherer groups, contrary to many archaeologists\u2019 expectations that hunter-gatherer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/antiquity\/article\/abs\/neolithic-transition-in-europe-comparing-broad-scale-genetic-and-local-scale-isotopic-evidence\/7A9B34DC5AD6E073B6BBDE7A68951698\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">women would \u201cmarry up\u201d<\/a>, suggests that perceptions need to change.<\/p>\n<p>Beakers, Bronze Age and Britain<\/p>\n<p>Around 4,600 years ago, though, people were on the move again. A new wave of settlers\u2014pastoralist-farmers hailing ultimately from the Russian steppe \u2013 began to infiltrate the Rhine area in the form of the Corded Ware culture. As growing numbers moved in from the east, they were transformed\u2014we still don\u2019t understand exactly how\u2014into what is known as the Bell Beaker culture.<\/p>\n<p>Within a few centuries, the genetic landscape of the Rhine-Meuse region, including the wetlands, was completely reshaped. Our colleagues found that, 4,400 years ago, less than 20% of the ancestry of the people living there traced back to the earlier farmers and hunter-gatherers. At least 80% of their ancestry was now from the steppe.<\/p>\n<p>The Bell Beaker people rapidly expanded and rippled out further in all directions, creating the Bronze Age of central Europe. And not only central Europe \u2013 they also spread across the English Channel and throughout Britain, extending as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2108001119\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">far north as Orkney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It looks as if the British farmers who had been building Stonehenge over the preceding centuries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature25738\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all but disappeared<\/a> \u2013 again, for reasons which remain unclear.<\/p>\n<p>But did they actually vanish?
