{"id":980428,"date":"2026-05-23T19:10:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T19:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/980428\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T19:10:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T19:10:21","slug":"cannes-chief-thierry-fremaux-says-putin-will-not-win-ukraine-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/980428\/","title":{"rendered":"Cannes Chief Thierry Fr\u00e9maux Says Putin Will Not Win Ukraine War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Berlin Film Festival has demonstrated reticence about addressing geopolitical matters, but <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cannes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cannes\" data-tag=\"cannes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cannes<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/thierry-fremaux-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_thierry-fremaux-2\" data-tag=\"thierry-fremaux-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thierry Fr\u00e9maux<\/a> is showing no such hesitation, at least as regards the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThis war that Ukraine will not lose and Putin will not win,\u201d Fr\u00e9maux said of the full-scale invasion the Russian president launched against his neighbor in 2022. \u201cAnd in any case, he already loses when there are filmmakers of such quality who make films of such quality [about Ukraine] to say what is the truth about this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFr\u00e9maux\u2019s remarks came Friday as he kicked off the announcement of the annual L\u2019Oeil d\u2019or Prize, which goes to the top documentary at Cannes. He saluted the president of the jury, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/mstyslav-chernov\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mstyslav-chernov\" data-tag=\"mstyslav-chernov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mstyslav Chernov<\/a>, the Ukrainian filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/03\/20-days-in-mariupol-wins-best-documentary-feature-at-2024-oscars-1235852586\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who won the Oscar<\/a> for his 2023 documentary 20 Days in Mariupol. And that is a hard thing to do because artists are not only speaking for themselves and for the people about whom they\u2019re making their films, they\u2019re also inevitably speaking for the country, and they inevitably make political statements. This year, Vesna, a drama set partially in Ukraine directed by Lithuanian-born filmmaker Rostislav Kirpicenko, premiered out of competition. Minotaur, the film by exiled Russian director Andre\u00ef Zviaguintsev, premiered in Competition. The drama is set in 2022 against the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m happy Ukraine is mentioned in Cannes. I\u2019m happy that I can represent Ukraine in Cannes, especially in this documentary jury as president,\u201d Chernov told us. \u201cAnd I\u2019m happy that more and more Ukrainian films are seen around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHe added, \u201cI keep thinking about the panel discussion that I was invited to last year at the Sheffield DocFest [in the UK] and it was called \u2018Are there too many Ukrainian films?\u2019 I see that question coming again and again, to which I can only say, \u2018No.\u2019 As long as this war goes on, it will be never enough. That being said, I think it is very important and I hope that Ukraine films and Ukraine\u2019s art will go beyond topics of war because I think there\u2019s just so much more to Ukrainian culture, to Ukrainian history to present to the world. And I\u2019m personally planning films that will go deeper and present Ukraine and Ukraine culture and Ukrainian myth and Ukrainian life beyond the stereotype of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tChernov elaborated on his upcoming projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m working on several films currently and one of them is a documentary\u2026 my dream [is that it] will be about the end of the war and will be the third part of the trilogy about Ukraine that we\u2019ve already seen with 20 Days in Mariupol and 2000 Meters to Andriivka.
