Hugh Gaitskell met the ‘expected standard’ for inclusion and personal development & wellbeing, but were graded as ‘needs attention’ for achievement; attendance & behaviour; curriculum & teaching; early years; and leadership & governance.

The inspection took place on 17 March 2026. Ofsted’s previous inspection in 2021 found the school to be ‘Good’ in all areas.

Inspectors found that:

“Hugh Gaitskell Primary School is a calm and friendly place. Staff build positive relationships with pupils.”

“Pupils’ conduct in school is positive, and pupils learn in an environment where any form of discrimination is not tolerated, including bullying.” And:

“The school’s ‘Voyager’ scheme broadens pupils’ experiences. Pupils create a scrapbook of these experiences to share with friends and family.”

But they also said:

“The quality of work that pupils produce across the curriculum is variable.” And:

“Pupils receive a mixed quality of education at the school. … Over time, too many pupils have not been ready for their next steps. Pupils’ outcomes in national tests and examinations have been below national averages over time.”

In a letter to parents, Mrs K McNulty, Headteacher at Hugh Gaitskell, said:

“The report also recognises many of the strengths that make our school such a special place, including our inclusive ethos, the support provided for pupils with additional needs, the rich opportunities available through our personal development and enrichment programmes, and the strong culture of safeguarding that helps children feel safe, valued and supported.

“We are pleased that Ofsted acknowledged the dedication of our staff team and the positive relationships we have with our families and community. While we remain ambitious and committed to further improvement, we are proud of the many positive aspects of school life highlighted in the report.”

You can read the full Ofsted report here.

Photo: Google

While you’re here, can we ask a favour?

South Leeds Life is published by a not-for-profit social enterprise.
