{"id":98560,"date":"2025-05-13T17:00:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T17:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/98560\/"},"modified":"2025-05-13T17:00:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T17:00:12","slug":"eu-lawmakers-probe-rule-of-law-in-melonis-italy-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/98560\/","title":{"rendered":"EU lawmakers probe rule of law in Meloni\u2019s Italy \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cSome of us are aware that the rule of law in Italy has deteriorated under the current government,\u201d Greens lawmaker Daniel Freund told POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>Freund pointed to \u201ca difference between the general political perception of Meloni\u2019s government here in Brussels and in Germany and the concrete things happening on the ground.\u201d With that, he was referring to acceptance for Meloni by the center-right European People\u2019s Party in Brussels (and the closely associated Christian Democrats in Germany). <\/p>\n<p>In October last year, Meloni\u2019s right-wing party beefed up its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/giorgia-meloni-ban-surrogacy-big-backlash-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">domestic ban on surrogacy<\/a>\u00a0to include arrangements made abroad, imposing penalties of up to \u20ac1 million and two years in prison for violations. The Italian government also\u00a0previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2023\/03\/17\/italys-lgbtq-community-decries-governments-attacks-on-same-sex-parental-rights#:~:text=Brothers%20of%20Italy%2C%20the%20ruling,current%20ban%20on%20surrogate%20pregnancy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposed a European Commission<\/a>\u00a0regulation aimed at recognizing same-sex parents across EU borders.<\/p>\n<p>Meloni\u2019s administration as well proposed reforms of the legal system that have raised alarms about executive overreach and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/giorgia-melonis-italy-judges-viktor-orban-hungary-albania-rome-court-russia-war-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threats to judicial independence<\/a>. Allegations of media interference and censorship\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/giorgia-meloni-italy-press-journalists-watchdog-media-eu-politics-rule-of-law-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have added<\/a>\u00a0to concerns about democratic backsliding.<\/p>\n<p>Nicola Procaccini, Meloni\u2019s right-hand man in the the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists grouping in Parliament, opposed the hearing, according to an internal email.
