So they have been, are and will remain very important defense partners for the Europeans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lithuania&#8217;s finance minister pointed out that NATO\u2019s defense capabilities are particularly crucial to ensure his country&#8217;s continued security against Russia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor all border states that are on the front line with hostile neighbors, the participation of the United States [within NATO\u2019s framework] is absolutely crucially important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately, \u0160ad\u017eius described the upcoming EU-U.K. summit as \u201ckey for concluding the [defense] partnership between the U.K. and the European Union.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The EU and the U.K will meet on Monday for\u00a0a long-awaited summit that is expected to pave the way for closer security and defense relations after Brexit \u2014\u00a0provided that other thorny issues like fisheries are sorted.<\/p>\n<p>A positive outcome would also speed up the approval of the SAFE regulation, since the role of the U.K is one of the key outstanding topics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipation of these partners should be properly regulated in the legislative package.
