style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/earthquakes\/index.html\" id=\"mol-76460cd0-304e-11f0-ba45-371e5a9acb97\" rel=\"noopener\">earthquake<\/a> of magnitude 6.3 struck the island of Crete in <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/greece\/index.html\" id=\"mol-76504600-304e-11f0-ba45-371e5a9acb97\" rel=\"noopener\">Greece<\/a> on Wednesday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The quake was at a depth of 83 km (51.57 miles), GFZ said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a slightly lower quake, at 6.1 magnitude.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The current damage to the island is not currently known, though the USGS estimates that there is little risk of landslides or liquefaction, the loss of the ground&#8217;s structural integrity, occurring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to the USGS, tremors will likely have been felt across dozens of Greece&#8217;s islands, as well as the western coast of Turkey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Tremors are also likely to have been felt inland, around the\u00a0Mu\u011fla and Ayd\u0131n provinces of Turkey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Shaking was reported as far as Egypt, Syria and Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The region lies in one of the most seismically active zones in Europe, where the African and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-e73af855c64a44e4\" damaging events in the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Crete is home to more than 624,000 people, with around a third of the island&#8217;s population living in the capital city of Heraklion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The island is also one of the most popular holiday destinations in the whole of Greece, with 15% of visitors arriving in Heraklion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Generally, any earthquake above a 6.0 can cause damage if it hits a populated area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/michigan\/index.html\" id=\"mol-52e3c0a0-3050-11f0-ba45-371e5a9acb97\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a>\u00a0Tech University, an estimated 100 earthquakes with a magnitude between 6.1 and 6.9 are recorded every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font
