{"id":99590,"date":"2025-05-14T01:58:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T01:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/99590\/"},"modified":"2025-05-14T01:58:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T01:58:13","slug":"germany-calls-for-pragmatic-un-peacekeeping-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/99590\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany calls for \u2018pragmatic\u2019 UN peacekeeping reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BERLIN\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Tuesday has called for &#8220;pragmatic and ambitious&#8221; UN peacekeeping reforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe following key question should guide our discussions over the next two years: how can we make peacekeeping more effective, more efficient, and fit for the future?\u201d Wadephul said at an international UN peacekeeping conference in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeacekeeping operations must be designed to respond swiftly to rapidly changing conflict dynamics. This requires Security Council mandates that are not only realistic but flexible,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Pointing out that the number of conflicts has increased over the past decade, he stressed that \u201cpeacekeeping must adapt to a changing international environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeacekeeping operations must be designed to respond swiftly to rapidly changing conflict dynamics. This requires Security Council mandates that are not only realistic but also flexible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also mentioned that peacekeeping missions require &#8220;a clear transition and exit strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissions should develop defined transition plans from the outset,\u201d the minister reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>Wadepuhl made clear that peacekeeping missions can \u201conly succeed\u201d if they have local support.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with diminished financial resources for the UN, Wadephul said: \u201cPeacekeeping needs more and sustainable funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUN peacekeeping remains a sound investment and a powerful example for global burden-sharing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius echoed Wadephul\u2019s statements by saying that UN peacekeeping \u201cremains a cornerstone of international stability and order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly believe that UN peacekeeping remains one of the most legitimate, effective, and cost-efficient tools of international crisis management. It is multilateralism in action. It is active burden-sharing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUN peacekeeping has proven to be a cornerstone of international crisis response for over 77 years.
