NHS Highland urged anyone who has symptoms, or lives with somebody who does, not to visit a healthcare facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Norovirus can affect people all year round and is a highly contagious virus, typically spread from person to person through the air, or on surfaces such as door handles, or in foods.<\/p>\n<p>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UKHSA wrote on X, formerly <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/twitter\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>: &#8220;We\u2019re outside the usual #Norovirus season, but cases are still higher than expected for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Caught the &#8216;winter vomiting bug&#8217; this spring? Find out what to do and how to stop the spread in our blog post.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UKHSA said in a blog post that &#8216;good hand hygiene&#8217; is essential to stop the spread of norovirus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The health agency said: &#8220;To avoid catching norovirus or passing it on to others, wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;This is most important following an episode of illness, after using the toilet, before eating or preparing food, as well as cleaning up vomit or diarrhoea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Unrecognizable-man-stomach-pain.jpg\" alt=\"An unrecognizable man is suffering from abdominal pain lying on the bed crossed his arms in the stomach\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Norovirus can trigger abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea (Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/health\/how-kill-norovirus-ukhsa-issues-30954891\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">not effective against norovirus<\/a>, the UKHSA warns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The latest UKHSA data shows that levels of norovirus have &#8216;remained high&#8217; in recent weeks. It comes after the number of patients in hospital with norovirus <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-warns-england-being-hit-31043938\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reached all-time highs<\/a> in February, NHS figures revealed, with rates more than double those seen the previous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Data shows that the total number of norovirus cases between weeks 14 and 17 of 2025 was more than double (156.9 per cent) the five-season average for the same four-week period, which is used to track seasonal patterns in the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The number of norovirus outbreaks were also 43.3 per cent higher than the five-season average, the UKHSA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It comes just weeks after <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/health\/ukhsa-warns-second-norovirus-wave-31093103\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the UKHSA warned of a possible second wave of norovirus<\/a> following a shift in the circulating strains of the virus. It said in February that immunity to one strain of the virus doesn\u2019t guarantee protection against others, urging Brits to be aware that they could get sick for a second time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Data revealed a surge in cases of the GII.17 norovirus strain, while another common strain, known as GII.4, was also becoming increasingly prevalent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Norovirus-leads-to-hospital-bed-closures.jpg\" alt=\" Undated handout file photo issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the Norovirus virons \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Hand sanitisers do not kill norovirus, experts warn(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Symptoms of norovirus include sudden onset of nausea, projectile vomiting and diarrhoea but can also include a high temperature, abdominal pain and aching limbs, the UKHSA says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UKHSA has urged Brits to remember the following if they come down with norovirus:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Norovirus cannot be treated with antibiotics<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Vomiting and diarrhoea causes your body to lose water and salts, which can lead to dehydration, so it is important to drink plenty of fluids to prevent this<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 ENBBt\">Stay at home.
