A row has broken out over whether some parts of Stockport<\/a> are getting their \u2018fair share\u2019. It comes after Bramall Hall was awarded another \u00a31m.<\/p>\n Bramall Hall, a Grade I-listed heritage site, is one of Stockport\u2019s most treasured historical buildings. The manor house in Bramhall<\/a> is largely Tudor in design with its oldest parts dating back to the 14th century.<\/p>\n The hall has been undergoing renovations to preserve the building going forward after \u00a31.6m was awarded in 2024 to fix long-term issues in the roof. Now Stockport Council<\/a> has announced an extra \u00a31m has been awarded by the UK Government from the Museum Estate and Development Fund bringing the total to \u00a32.6m.<\/p>\n Click here<\/a> to get the biggest stories straight to your inbox in our Daily Newsletter<\/strong><\/p>\n Coun Dan Oliver, the Cabinet Member responsible for culture at Stockport Council, said: \u201cThis funding is a big boost in helping us protect and enhance it for future generations.<\/p>\n “The funding will support vital upgrades to this nationally significant building, helping to protect its historic fabric while improving access for visitors, families and school groups.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re proud to see Bramall Hall recognised as a place of national cultural importance and to continue welcoming people from Stockport and beyond to explore its history.\u201d<\/p>\n Work is being carried out to restore Bramall Hall’s roof(Image: Stockport council)<\/p>\n However the level of funding going to places like Bramhall have come under fire from the borough\u2019s Labour Party<\/a>. Councillor Rachel Wise, who leads the Labour<\/a> group, said they were \u2018always happy to see investment coming into our borough\u2019 but criticised the ruling Liberal Democrats<\/a> for only telling \u2018part of the story\u2019.<\/p>\n This is after Stockport council leader Coun Mark Roberts slammed the UK government for rejecting a \u00a3500,000 bid for library funding. At the time, Coun Wise pointed to the increased funding Bramall Hall is getting to suggest \u2018maybe the issue isn\u2019t the government\u2019.<\/p>\n She told the Manchester Evening News the libraries money \u2018wouldn\u2019t have touched the sides on issues like fixing the roof in Reddish<\/a> or the underfloor heating in Hazel Grove<\/a>\u2019, adding: \u201cThe council\u2019s \u2018Neighbourhoods\u2019 structure is fundamentally imbalanced in terms of officer time and resource, with the eight wards in the North and middle of the borough, and containing half the population, afforded just two of the seven spots.<\/p>\n \u201cIf the Liberal Democrat administration is serious about addressing the country\u2019s largest deprivation gap, it must ensure that Bridgehall gets its fair share alongside Bramhall.\u201d<\/p>\n However Coun Oliver has hit back claiming \u2018her Labour government ensured the terms of the grant meant that it could not be used for the renovations Coun Wise mentions\u2019 over the libraries funding.<\/p>\n He added: \u201cWe have worked extensively to maximise the minimal resources we have to support the most deprived residents in Stockport.<\/p>\n “The fact is we are facing an uphill battle against a national Labour Government that rejected Lancashire Hill for Trailblazer Neighbourhood status, and the much-needed financial support that comes with it, as well as omitting Stockport from its \u00a3600 million Recovery Grant.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is a reason that councils up and down the country are seeing their library assets struggle to match the needs of residents \u2013 the chronic underfunding of local government.
