Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong> said he is not buying that his friend and former late night competitor Stephen Colbert<\/strong> was losing tens of millions of dollars per year for CBS.<\/p>\n \u201cThese are just made-up numbers,\u201d the veteran ABC host said about Colbert reportedly losing $40 million per year.<\/p>\n He made that comment in a New York Magazine profile<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n Kimmel said it didn\u2019t make sense to him that CBS offered Colbert a multi-year extension in 2023 if the show was losing big bucks annually.<\/p>\n \u201cAm I to believe that over the course of those two years, they suddenly started losing $40 million a year?\u201d he asked rhetorically.<\/p>\n That\u2019s the amount that was reported<\/a> last year, soon after CBS announced it was ending Colbert\u2019s Late Show in May 2026. CBS confirmed that figure last week in a statement that took a not-so-subtle shot at Colbert<\/a> and championed his replacement.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re proud to partner with\u00a0Byron Allen<\/strong>\u00a0on a new business and programming model for late night that proactively addresses a network daypart that was cost prohibitive to continue,\u201d the network said in a statement. \u201cWith this \u2018time buy\u2019 model, we have shifted an hour that was\u00a0losing roughly $40 million<\/a> annually to $15 million in profit \u2014 a $55 million swing.\u201d<\/p>\n The statement was shared with\u00a0Variety<\/a>\u00a0and several other trades on Thursday.<\/p>\n That came a week after Colbert\u2019s much-publicized swan song as the host of\u00a0The Late Show.\u00a0Colbert\u2019s time slot was replaced by Allen\u2019s\u00a0Comics Unleashed,\u00a0which has been syndicated since 2006; CBS is now\u00a0leasing the airtime<\/a>\u00a0used by Colbert to Allen\u2019s media company, which will handle selling all the ads.<\/p>\n Kimmel told New York that he also doesn\u2019t buy that the late night format is fading into oblivion.<\/p>\n He said it was \u201csilly\u201d to say the late night was dying \u201cif you look at the number of views me and my colleagues get online every day and add in our linear-television ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not just dying of natural causes,\u201d Kimmel added. \u201cWe\u2019re being poisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n He did not point to anyone or anything in particular that is poisoning the format.<\/p>\n As for his longtime rival President Donald Trump<\/strong>, Kimmel had this to say: \u201cI don\u2019t love him. I don\u2019t hate him, either. I feel sorry for him.
