A component more familiar in advanced computing systems has appeared inside a Russian missile, offering a revealing clue about Moscow’s technological dependencies.

Specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense examined the new Russian S-71 “Monochrome” air-launched cruise missile and found an Nvidia Jetson Orin computer module in its design. The intelligence agency believes that the use of such equipment may indicate the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into Russian weaponry.

Military intelligence added information about the discovered components to the War&Sanctions portal, in the “Components in Weapons” section. Overall, the database was supplemented with information on 35 electronic components identified in various samples of Russian weapons.

What components were found in Russian weapons

Among the new entries added to the War&Sanctions database are parts found in Russian missiles and drones:

components of a passive radar seeker, which Russia has begun installing on Geran-2 UAVs to detect and strike surface-to-air missile systems and radar stations of Ukraine’s Defense Forces;
a Chinese Honpho TS130C-01 camera found in the Geran-4 jet-powered drone;
components of the active radar seeker of the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missile;
an Nvidia Jetson Orin microcomputer in the S-71 “Monochrome” air-launched cruise missile.

Why Nvidia Jetson Orin is important for analyzing the “Monochrome” missile

Nvidia Jetson Orin is a computing module that can be used to run complex algorithms, including processing data from sensors, cameras, and other systems. Its presence in the S-71 “Monochrome” missile may indicate Russia’s possible use of artificial intelligence-based solutions.

The Main Intelligence Directorate, together with Ukrainian research institutions, continues to study samples of Russian weapons to determine the origin of their electronic components. Such research makes it possible to identify foreign-made technologies without which Russia would find it more difficult to produce missiles, drones, and other weapons.

Russia depends on imported electronics

Two years of work by the War&Sanctions portal have shown that Russia has been unable to fully replace imported high-tech components with domestic developments. The discovery of the Nvidia Jetson Orin module in the “Monochrome” missile underscores the importance of strengthening sanctions and international cooperation to block supply channels for critical technologies to Russia.

Previously, specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate identified more than 5,800 foreign components in hundreds of samples of Russian weaponry. This data is used to identify the technological dependencies of Russia’s military-industrial complex and restrict Russia’s access to the necessary electronics.
