This week, the downward trend in greenhouse tomato prices resumed in Ukraine, according to analysts at the EastFruit project. In most regions of the country, favorable weather conditions facilitated active harvesting of open-field vegetables. This factor increased pressure on the market, as tomato supply continued to exceed the existing demand.
Toward the end of the week, prices for high-quality tomatoes fell to UAH 25-50/kg ($0.56-1.12/kg), which is on average 17% lower than at the end of the previous working week. Both producers and wholesale companies attribute difficulties in selling their desired volumes to the unsatisfactory quality of tomatoes. Plants are suffering from drought and heat, while fruits are often damaged by sunburn and develop cracks, which generally reduces the marketability of the produce.

It should be noted that despite the rapid decline in greenhouse tomato prices, this product is still being offered on the Ukrainian market at an average price 15% higher than a year ago. Ukrainian producers explain this situation by lower production volumes of these vegetables during the current season.
