Ukraine’s national holiday will coincide with a major diplomatic spotlight, as European governments press the UN to revisit the war’s consequences.
On Monday, August 24, when Ukraine marks Independence Day, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on the consequences of Russia’s ongoing aggression. The date of the meeting was announced by the Security Council Secretariat.
The discussion was initiated by five European members of the UN Security Council: Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, and the United Kingdom.
Who Will Chair the UN Security Council Meeting
The meeting is expected to be chaired by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. In August, Denmark holds the presidency of the UN Security Council.
UN Deputy Secretaries-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Tom Fletcher, responsible for political and humanitarian affairs respectively, are expected to speak at the meeting.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, which corresponds to 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time.
Previous Discussions of Russian Aggression
The previous emergency meeting of the UN Security Council dedicated to Ukraine and Russian aggression took place on July 27.
In addition, on August 10, Security Council members held an informal Arria-formula meeting. It focused on Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law concerning prisoners of war and civilians.
