On Monday, August 24, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on Russia’s ongoing full-scale war against Ukraine. The discussion will take place on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
Who initiated the UN Security Council meeting
The meeting was initiated by five European members of the UN Security Council: Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, and the United Kingdom.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen is expected to chair the meeting.
The UN will be represented by Under-Secretaries-General for Political and Humanitarian Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and Tom Fletcher.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, or 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time.
Previous discussions on the situation in Ukraine
The most recent emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine took place on July 27. It was convened following Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure and vessels in the Black Sea.
On August 10, the UN Security Council also held an informal Arria-formula meeting. It focused on Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law concerning detained civilians and prisoners of war.
The new meeting will provide another international platform for discussing the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the humanitarian situation caused by the war.
