He noted specifically that \u201cone thing that has changed\u201d the nature of the conflict is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ukraine\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"82\">Ukraine<\/a> becoming \u201cincreasingly effective at conducting long-range strikes deep into Russia\u201d and hitting \u201ccritical nodes of the Russian economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"80\">Russia<\/a> has always been capable of these long-range strikes,\u201d he explained, but Ukraine\u2019s ability to respond in kind means \u201cthe risk of escalation is real \u2014 more real than it was two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/AP26154631883080.jpg\" alt=\"Rubio testifying in the House\" class=\"wp-image-4594019\"  \/>Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaks during a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, on Capitol Hill, in Washington. (Mariam Zuhaib\/AP Photo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An onslaught of drones and missiles poured onto Ukraine on Tuesday, killing nearly two dozen and injuring over 100 more. The Institute for the Study of War speculated that the ramp-up in recent bombing campaigns is meant to pick up the slack of a fatigued land invasion that has slowed to a glacial pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Ukrainians have actually made some battlefield gains in the last month,\u201d Rubio told Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), praising them for \u201cbravely\u201d and \u201ceffectively fighting.\u201d He cited the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-defense\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"335\">Department of War<\/a> in asserting that the Russian side is among the first forces in modern history to suffer more deaths than casualties on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any doubt at this point in the minds of most observers around the world, and I would say in the minds of some inside of Russia, that the invasion of Ukraine has been a strategic disaster for them,\u201d the state secretary said, adding that Russia \u201cmay not even be able militarily to achieve the objectives they\u2019re demanding now in negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/4592927\/prospects-russia-ukraine-deal-rubio-putin-zelensky\/\">\u2018PROSPECTS DON\u2019T LOOK GREAT\u2019 FOR A RUSSIA-UKRAINE DEAL, RUBIO ACKNOWLEDGES<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/4592927\/prospects-russia-ukraine-deal-rubio-putin-zelensky\/\">Rubio is not optimistic<\/a> about the prospects of establishing peace any time soon.
