What happened<\/p>\n

Hungarian Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar<\/a> on Wednesday announced a deal with Ukraine that should clear the way for Kyiv to begin the process to join the European Union. Magyar\u2019s predecessor, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, had \u201cfiercely opposed Ukraine\u2019s EU accession,\u201d Politico<\/a> said, and had used Hungary\u2019s veto<\/a> in the 27-member bloc to thwart Ukraine and Moldova\u2019s \u201ctwinned\u201d membership bids in a decision \u201costensibly over minority rights for Hungarians living in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hungary\u2019s \u201cshift in position unfolded suddenly\u201d on Wednesday during a meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels, Euronews<\/a> said, and after weeks of negotiations between Hungary and Ukraine. Magyar later said on social media<\/a> that Kyiv had agreed to expand the \u201clinguistic, educational, cultural and political rights of the 100,000-strong Hungarian minority\u201d in Ukraine\u2019s western Transcarpathia region.<\/p>\n

What next?<\/p>\n

With Hungary\u2019s objections lifted, accession negotiations are expected to \u201cofficially move to the next stage\u201d at a June 15 meeting between the EU<\/a>, Moldova and Ukraine, Politico said. However, Magyar \u201creiterated his opposition to fast-track Ukraine\u2019s accession,\u201d Euronews said. \u201cIf Ukraine manages to close all 33 accession chapters within 10 or 15 years,\u201d he said, Hungary \u201cwill hold a legally binding referendum on the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.
