{"id":2214,"date":"2026-06-05T17:16:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T17:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/2214\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T17:16:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T17:16:13","slug":"maritime-drone-being-used-in-ukraine-war-explodes-at-romanian-port-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/2214\/","title":{"rendered":"Maritime drone being used in Ukraine war explodes at Romanian port \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A Ukrainian maritime drone that was being used in the country\u2019s war against Russia exploded at a Black Sea port in Romania, while three other sea drones exploded outside the port, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">No one was hurt in the blast on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The drone that self-detonated in the port of Constanta occurred at around 10.30 am, after the area had been secured and isolated by the Romanian Intelligence Service, coast guard and the Defence Ministry, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Romania&#x2019;s Defence Ministry said that nobody was hurt in the blast (Observator Antena\/AP)\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/XROIT7OZE5PUNF6WWZJV2QBYVY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"532\"\/>Romania\u2019s Defence Ministry said that nobody was hurt in the blast (Observator Antena\/AP) (undefined\/OBSERVATOR ANTENA 1 vi) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cImmediately after identifying the drone, the Ministry of Defence contacted its Ukrainian counterparts, who confirmed that they had lost control of the operation of four drones,\u201d the Romanian government said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe other three drones self-detonated \u2014 two offshore and the third outside the port.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cConfirmation of these events came from both the Ukrainian side and from data obtained by the Romanian authorities,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Romanian President Nicusor Dan said in a statement online that the Ukrainian forces \u201clost control of the assets as a result of electronic warfare actions\u201d by Russia, \u201clikely jamming\u201d, and that the drone\u2019s incursion into \u201cRomanian sovereign space is a direct consequence of the war waged by Russia\u201d against Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Ukrainian Navy confirmed in a statement that it had lost control of an unmanned naval boat \u201cwhile performing tasks in the Black Sea operational zone\u201d, and that its military was in contact with Romanian authorities \u201cto prevent losses among the civilian population\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Raed Arafat, the head of Romania\u2019s Department for Emergency Situations, told a news conference on Friday morning that helicopters had been deployed to search for more drones and that the authorities had issued text message alerts to residents.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The area was evacuated, authorities said (Observator Antena\/AP)\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/LDQ7XIXIONJQPBAERFVSYODQLM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"1201\"\/>The area was evacuated, authorities said (Observator Antena\/AP) (undefined\/OBSERVATOR ANTENA 1 vi) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a possibility that there may be other drones,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not panicking. These are preventive measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIf there are other drones, we want to make sure there is not another explosion in an area where people are not evacuated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After the port explosion, more than 1,300 people were evacuated from several Black Sea beaches and the routes leading to them were temporarily blocked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Just before 3pm, the emergency authorities announced they had suspended evacuation measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The incident occurred a week after a Russian aerial drone that was part of an attack on Ukraine went astray and struck an apartment building in Romania\u2019s eastern Danube port city of Galati, injuring two people in the Nato member country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Russian Embassy in Bucharest accused Romania on Friday of intentionally releasing \u201cincomplete information\u201d regarding the drone\u2019s origin, and said \u201cthree other similar drones\u201d belonging to Ukraine were drifting toward Romanian territorial waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThese are Ukrainian unmanned maritime vehicles, used by the Kyiv regime to commit terrorist acts against civilian ships and to create threats to the safety of navigation in the Black Sea,\u201d the embassy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAny attempts to associate, directly or indirectly, these drones with Russia and to assign it responsibility for the incident are without any reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The two incidents are some of the latest in a series of drone incursions \u2014 from both Russia and Ukraine \u2014 to hit Nato members since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A month ago, Greece made a formal complaint to the Ukrainian government after a military sea drone carrying explosives was discovered off a Greek island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Greece determined that it was Ukrainian-built.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Greek defence minister Nikos Dendias called it \u201can extremely serious issue\u201d and the complaint was forwarded to both Nato and the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Romanian forces destroyed another maritime drone in the Black Sea on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Since the beginning of the war next door, the Defence Ministry said that the Romanian navy has neutralised nine of the 156 sea mines in the Black Sea basin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">For its part, the European Union was giving \u201cfull solidarity and support to Romania\u201d, European Council president Antonio Costa said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe EU condemns the repeated violations of airspace of member states and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the security of all member states,\u201d he said in an online statement Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the third significant security incident in Romania in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThese incidents are a
