An explosion in Poland<\/a> left a 10m-wide crater after Russia launched an overnight missile attack on Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Polish armed forces are investigating a possible missile incursion after fighter jets were scrambled and sirens sounded in the eastern border city of Lublin in response to the Russian attack.<\/p>\n

Russian missiles hit<\/a> the Ukrainian city of Lviv overnight, near the Polish border, in a huge overnight bombardment of 74 missiles and 284 drones spanning east to west Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The operational command of the Polish armed forces said on Thursday morning that at least 12 missiles had been observed over western Ukraine, but they had not identified what had crashed into its territory.<\/p>\n

If proven, it could be the first time a Russian missile has crashed in Nato territory<\/a> since the start of the Ukraine war, a serious escalation of the conflict.<\/p>\n

Poland’s operational command said the missiles identified in Ukraine may have posed a threat to Polish airspace because of their flight path.<\/p>\n

It added that an unidentified object moving westward was detected in Polish airspace, with an F-16 fighter jet<\/a> sent to intercept it.<\/p>\n

But the object disappeared from radar system indications before a definitive identification could be made.<\/p>\n

An Mi-24 helicopter was sent to the probable crash site of the object in a rural area near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin district, 60 miles from the Ukraine border, the force said.<\/p>\n

Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, was travelling to the area where the airspace violation was recorded, a government spokesman said on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Lublin police dispatched counter-terrorism units, saying: “After 5am, police officers discovered a crater and scattered fragments of an unidentified object in a field between the towns of Tarnawa-Kolonia and Tokary, approximately 2km from any buildings.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Residents were woken up to the sounds of a “loud bang” before finding a crater in a field surrounded by forests, Polish media said.<\/p>\n

Nearby towns were woken by the sound of alarm sirens at around 4am local time.<\/p>\n

Because of the rough terrain, authorities began investigating the area using quad bikes before finding the crater, Lublin 112 reported.<\/p>\n

The area was then secured by police until the military arrived.<\/p>\n

“I heard what sounded like a bang, a huge bang. The windows in the apartment shook. We all flew out,” a resident told Lublin 112, a local news outlet.<\/p>\n

“We’ve never heard anything like this in all our lives. The windows almost blew out,” another resident said, while someone else described the quake as “like a bomb”.<\/p>\n

A Ukrainian defence missile struck a Polish border village<\/a> in 2022, and cruise missiles have entered its airspace briefly.<\/p>\n

Russia’s overnight strikes across Ukraine killed at least 13 people and wounded dozens more.<\/p>\n

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian forces killed a six-year-old girl and boys aged 11 and 17 in a mass attack targeting civilian infrastructure, said Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the regional military administration.<\/p>\n

In Lviv, more than 20 residential buildings, a school and two kindergartens were targeted in heavy Russian strikes.<\/p>\n

Children were among the injured in the early morning attack, Andrii Sadovyi, the Lviv mayor, said.<\/p>\n

Ballistic missiles also rained down on Kyiv, killing a 31-year-old man and wounding two others.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The missiles struck residential buildings, a market, a garage and storage facilities, officials said.<\/p>\n

The attacks occurred shortly after Volodymyr Zelensky returned from the US, where he said Donald Trump agreed to give Ukraine licences for Patriot air defence missiles<\/a>.<\/p>\n
