Laura Loomer, one of President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>most influential outside allies, recently returned from\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0with an unexpected message for the Make America Great Again<\/a> movement: she had been wrong about the war.<\/p>\n

Like many of Trump\u2019s supporters, Loomer had long opposed U.S. military aid to Ukraine, reflecting the\u00a0Republican Party\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0broader divide between traditional national security hawks and the increasingly dominant \u201cAmerica First\u201d wing. But after touring bombed neighborhoods, meeting Ukrainian officials, and documenting the destruction caused by Russian missile and drone strikes for her millions of followers, Loomer publicly reversed herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to have moral clarity. I don\u2019t care if people in the GOP disavow me. They will come to see how evil Russia<\/a> is as they continue funding Iran with weapons to murder US soldiers as they call for President Trump to be assassinated,\u201d she wrote in a series of posts on X. \u201cI am my own person. I think for myself because I am not a Russian bot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her reversal also carries unusual weight inside Trump\u2019s political orbit. Trump himself amplified a clip from Loomer\u2019s interview with Ukrainian President\u00a0Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a>\u00a0on Truth Social July 23, writing simply, \u201cvery good!!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Trumpworld insiders told the\u00a0Washington Examiner\u00a0the shift could further reinforce the president\u2019s evolving views on the conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s more than significant,\u201d said one senior\u00a0Trump\u00a0administration official. \u201cI don\u2019t want to say that President Trump and Laura are totally in lockstep on every issue, but it\u2019s safe to say she has his ear. I think she has her finger on the pulse of the base in a way that many, including some in the president\u2019s inner D.C. circle, do not \u2014\u00a0and they find that grating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump himself has steadily signaled growing support for Ukraine in recent months. Trump allies officials previously told the\u00a0Washington Examiner\u00a0that the president has been impressed by Ukraine\u2019s rapid expansion of its domestic defense industry and its increasingly sophisticated long-range drone campaign against Russian targets. More recently, Trump announced that the United States would grant licenses for Ukraine to produce its own Patriot missiles and hosted Zelensky at the White House<\/a> on July 24.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president has a humanitarian heart and wants this war settled so the senseless killing ends,\u201d a White House official previously told the\u00a0Washington Examiner. \u201cThe president and his team have worked very hard to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and he remains optimistic that we\u2019ll ultimately get a peace deal done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Loomer has never been a member of either Trump administration<\/a>, few outside government have wielded more influence over the personnel surrounding the president.<\/p>\n

Last April, she met privately with Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior White House officials to argue that several national security aides were insufficiently loyal to the president\u2019s agenda. Trump subsequently dismissed multiple officials she had criticized, including former National Security Council officials David Feith, Brian Walsh, and Thomas Boodry, and retired Air Force Gen. Timothy Haugh, formerly the director general of the National Security Agency and commander of Cyber Command.<\/p>\n

Loomer\u2019s reversal also appears to reflect a broader shift among some prominent MAGA voices as Russia\u2019s attacks on Ukraine have intensified.<\/p>\n

\u201cUkraine has been fighting for their very existence against an evil dictator. I see now the importance of the Ukrainian victory against Russia. I hope Trump and the people of the United States will lend their support,\u201d conservative podcaster Tim Pool wrote to his nearly 3 million followers on the evening of July 23.<\/p>\n
