Take unmanned systems: Kyiv has successfully implemented a drone strategy that combines a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/ukrainealert\/ukraines-drone-wall-is-europes-first-line-of-defense-against-russia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drone wall<\/a> along the immediate front, long-range drones that strike deep inside Russia, AI-enabled mid-range drones that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/beyond-the-front-line-ukraine-is-deepening-its-drone-wall\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">target<\/a> logistics behind the front, and naval drones that help enforce a blockade at sea. Cheap technology, paired with intelligence operations, is also <a href=\"https:\/\/cepa.org\/article\/ukraines-explosive-global-reach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expanding<\/a> Ukraine\u2019s global reach.<\/p>\n<p>For Ukraine, success depends on using asymmetric means wherever possible to defend itself, preserve the lives of its soldiers and maximise the costs imposed on Russia. Now, robot versus robot battles are common. However, Russia has adapted as well. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidkirichenko\/2026\/07\/07\/how-russia-learned-to-adapt-to-drone-warfare\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">learned<\/a> from drone warfare and was the first to deploy fibre-optic drones at scale across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Along the front, it is a constant race to develop countermeasures. One side deploys a new tactic, and the other races to counter it. After Russia lost access to Starlink earlier this year, it doubled down on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GrandpaRoy2\/status\/2079757499641508154?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">mesh network<\/a> technology, making its <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GrandpaRoy2\/status\/2080429292312232064\" rel=\"nofollow\">drones<\/a> harder to jam because nearby drones would relay the signal to one another. To counter Russian jet drones, Ukraine has developed faster interceptors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ukrainian-interceptor-drone-jetkiller-p1-sun-skyfall-jet-powered-shahed-2026-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">equipped<\/a> with AI-based terminal guidance systems.<\/p>\n<p>With unmanned ground vehicles, Ukraine is integrating AI-powered target detection systems, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/ukraine-ground-drones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">various sensors<\/a>, enabling <a href=\"https:\/\/nextgendefense.com\/ukrainian-ugv-target-detection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">robots<\/a> to identify enemy soldiers and equipment farther away and more accurately.<\/p>\n<p>However, the recent mid-range strike campaign has highlighted one of the most visible impacts of AI-enabled drones. Mid-range drones operating at depths beyond 100\u00a0km, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/defence-ua.com\/weapon_and_tech\/stala_vidoma_realna_vartist_drona_hornet_jakimi_paljat_benzovozi_a_teper_j_litaki_rashistiv-23657.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hornet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GloOouD\/status\/2077380758054769139\" rel=\"nofollow\">Darts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bayraktar_1love\/status\/2075197179975565473\" rel=\"nofollow\">RAM-2X<\/a>, among others, have helped wreak havoc on <a href=\"https:\/\/cepa.org\/article\/russias-land-bridge-becomes-a-highway-to-hell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russian supply lines<\/a>. With <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GrandpaRoy2\/status\/2076809676583571514\" rel=\"nofollow\">autonomous<\/a> terminal lock guidance, these drones are harder for Russian defences to stop, as the impact of electromagnetic warfare is reduced. If Russia is forced to dedicate more resources to defending its rear and protecting its logistics, it will eventually ease some of the burden on the front.<\/p>\n<p>To accelerate that effort, Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/mod.gov.ua\/en\/news\/ministry-of-defence-launches-first-ai-center-of-excellence-to-advance-ai-integration-in-defense-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched<\/a> the Defense AI Center \u2018A1\u2019 within the Ministry of Defense in March. Led by Danylo Tsvok, the centre aims to help build what he describes as an AI army. \u2018In modern warfare, the advantage goes to whoever makes decisions faster,\u2019 Tsvok said.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, Ukraine is attempting to integrate as much battlefield data as possible, not only to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Osinttechnical\/status\/2078960147225776255\" rel=\"nofollow\">identify<\/a> targets and shorten the kill chain, but also to build comprehensive battlefield awareness. \u2018The Vezha module in Delta for real-time battlefield video analysis is also powered by AI,\u2019 said Tsvok. <a href=\"https:\/\/cepa.org\/article\/the-heart-of-war-ukraines-key-battlefield-system\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delta<\/a> is the Ukrainian military\u2019s battlefield management and situational awareness software. \u2018AI detects roughly 70 percent of enemy hardware. The target is detected in about 2.2 seconds.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>There is a reason AI companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/zelenskiy-meets-palantir-ceo-ukraine-expands-use-ai-war-2026-05-12\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palantir<\/a> are interested in working with Ukraine. \u2018Ukraine and Palantir have jointly developed a system for detailed analysis of airstrikes, implemented AI solutions to handle large volumes of intelligence data, and integrated these technologies into the planning of deep strike operations,\u2019 Tsvok added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the war, many manufacturers rushed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/why-ukraines-ai-drones-arent-a-breakthrough-yet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deploy<\/a> AI-enabled targeting systems. Not all proved effective. With so many players competing for attention, trusted benchmarks are needed to verify effective systems.<\/p>\n<p>Yaroslav Azhnyuk, chief executive of battlefield AI-module company The Fourth Law, said the defence industry needed standardised benchmarks, similar to those used for large language models, to measure the real battlefield performance of AI-enabled drones. \u2018Building those benchmarks is simply engineering,\u2019 said Azhnyuk. \u2018It\u2019s like building a rocket,\u2019 he said. \u2018Once you\u2019ve done it, it seems straightforward, but getting there takes years of experimentation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And in the next phase of the war, software will continue to play an increasingly important role alongside hardware. Autonomy can be scaled more easily when both the software and hardware are inexpensive and effective. The cheapest version of Fourth Law\u2019s TFL-1 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefourthlaw.ai\/#section4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">module<\/a>, is available for only US$150 (A$213).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Ukraine has established a rapid cycle for creating and refining technologies,\u2019 said Tsvok. \u2018This is important because AI systems must be constantly updated to respond to current challenges on the front lines.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Supporting this effort, Tsvok said more than 200 Ukrainian companies were developing AI-enabled drones, while more than 70 AI and computer vision systems were already in use on the front line.<\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, chief of the German army, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k4TqPqGer8A\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in June, \u2018Data is like ammunition,\u2019 and Kyiv is capitalising on that opportunity by conducting data diplomacy. In the long term, Ukraine aims to build a technological shield centred on <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/how-ukraines-battlefield-data-is-shaping-the-future-of-warfare\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">autonomous systems<\/a>, while leveraging partnerships with the West, sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/voxukraine.org\/en\/how-ukraine-s-data-driven-approach-is-impacting-the-war-effort\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">battlefield data<\/a>, rapidly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/ever-faster-weapon-cycles-innovation-and-economics-in-the-war-in-ukraine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iterating<\/a> on new technologies and improving their effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We truly believe that AI will become mass technology in the army,\u2019 said Tsvok. \u2018One of the cornerstones of AI products should be simplicity, so that every service member can use them easily regardless of their level of digital literacy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But Ukraine is not alone in this pursuit. Russia is increasingly adopting autonomous tech. Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/armiya-i-opk\/27848079\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in June that the Kremlin was attempting to advance AI adoption in the army.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ukrainian drone specialist Serhii \u2018Flash\u2019 Beskrestnov, new variants of Russia\u2019s Geran Seeker and Molniya strike drones <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/serhii_flash\/7527\" rel=\"nofollow\">use<\/a> onboard AI for target recognition and autonomous terminal guidance. Equipped with mesh networking, they are far more resistant to electronic warfare and, Flash says, are already being <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GrandpaRoy2\/status\/2073097865656996037?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">deployed<\/a> extensively. Additionally, Moscow is <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/serhii_flash\/7403\" rel=\"nofollow\">extending<\/a> the same Seeker architecture to Gerbera drones, while working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/eng\/news\/2026\/06\/24\/8040873\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advance<\/a> autonomous capabilities in Shahed drones.<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, Ukrainian military planners envision autonomous robots leading assaults by clearing enemy positions before troops advance. Soldiers would rapidly deploy drones at a moment\u2019s notice to hunt Russian targets. Naval drones would lie in wait at sea, activated remotely before autonomously striking their targets. In long-range strikes, AI would fuse battlefield data, identify targets and calculate optimal flight paths, increasing the success of deep strikes inside Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides are racing to deploy more autonomous systems. For now, Ukraine retains an edge, leveraging partnerships with the West and its fast-paced innovation ecosystem. But the race is only beginning. Whichever side gains the greater advantage in autonomous systems will hold the upper hand in the next phase of the arms race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The war in Ukraine has become increasingly technological.
