The Kinburn Peninsula is currently under the complete fire control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said Denis Nosikov, commander of the Odesa Operational Tactical Group, in an interview.<\/p>\n
According to him, units of Russia\u2019s 337th Separate Assault Regiment still remain on the spit, with their total strength approaching 2,500 personnel. Russian forces are bringing in reserves from the Orikhiv and Melitopol directions. Nosikov noted that despite heavy losses, Russian forces are attempting to hold their positions on the Kinburn Spit.<\/p>\n
In his assessment, the peninsula is of strategic importance to the aggressor\u2019s army: from there, Russian forces can shell the southern coast of Mykolaiv region and control the Dnipro-Buh estuary. For the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the spit opens a route toward occupied Kherson region and Crimea.<\/p>\n
No one will allow them to withdraw any farther, either to the right or to the left. This is a route into Kherson region and beyond. The distance to Kherson region is short, and it is only 40\u201350 kilometers toward Crimea. Any medium-range UAVs can already reach that far. It is the same logistics and the same occupied territories. In other words, relatively inexpensive UAVs can already be used to operate very effectively from there. So, of course, they will hold it at any cost, because this opens the way forward, and the situation with Crimea will be very difficult.<\/p>\n

They try to take advantage of any opportunity \u2013 for example, weather conditions. The day before yesterday, the weather was slightly better, and they tried to bring in eight vehicles and hide them somehow, to deliver something so they would have at least something. All eight vehicles were destroyed.<\/p>\n

There are constant instances of them fleeing from there. We regularly record such incidents, including mass desertions. When ammunition, food, and water are not delivered, when they are under constant fire, they run from one dugout to another, while people they see around them are constantly being killed, and so on. We hear and see all the chaos unfolding on the radio. Since the logistical routes are constantly being mined, including with anti-personnel explosive devices, escaping is not always possible either, so the entire area becomes something of a trap. There is almost constant panic, almost constant orders to stay put and go nowhere, to hold their positions, and so on.<\/p>\n

Administrative boundary, population, and positions<\/p>\n
An administrative boundary divides the Kinburn Peninsula on the Black Sea between Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. Four villages are located on the peninsula: three belong to Mykolaiv region \u2013 Pokrovka, Pokrovske, and Vasylivka \u2013 and one to Kherson region \u2013 Heroiske. Before the full-scale war, up to 1,000 people lived there. Tourism was the main source of income, as a significant part of the territory is a nature reserve.<\/p>\n
