The strikes highlight how the conflict has increasingly expanded beyond trenches and battlefield positions. Both Moscow and Kyiv have been using drones, missiles and artillery to target military and industrial infrastructure, while civilian areas have repeatedly been caught in the attacks.<\/p>\n
The latest incidents also point to the growing human cost of the escalation. The United Nations has warned that civilian deaths have risen as Russia and Ukraine have significantly increased long-range attacks this year.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian strike hits Russian industrial region<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian drone attack struck Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan, a Russian region located more than 1,000 kilometres from Ukraine. The area is an important energy and industrial centre and has several major oil facilities that Kyiv has increasingly targeted.<\/p>\n
Regional authorities said 12 people were killed and 39 wounded. Unverified footage circulating online showed a large plume of black smoke near an oil facility in the industrial city.<\/p>\n
The attack demonstrates Ukraine’s growing ability to conduct strikes deep inside Russian territory. Kyiv has increasingly used long-range drones to hit oil refineries and other energy infrastructure, seeking to disrupt a sector that is important to Russia’s economy and war effort.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight, although Moscow does not normally provide details on how many drones were destroyed before reaching their intended targets.<\/p>\n
Russian artillery kills five in Kharkiv<\/p>\n
While Ukraine is striking targets deep inside Russia, Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian settlements close to the front.<\/p>\n
Five people were killed in the village of Bugaivka in Kharkiv region’s Chuhuiv district after Russian forces carried out what Ukrainian authorities described as a major artillery strike on a residential area.<\/p>\n
Several houses were destroyed in the attack. The incident underlines the continued danger faced by civilians in towns and villages near the battlefield, where artillery and drone strikes remain frequent.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia had launched 126 drones during its overnight attacks. Ukrainian officials also reported that a man was killed when a Russian drone struck a taxi in the frontline Kherson region.<\/p>\n
Civilian areas increasingly caught in escalation<\/p>\n
The latest attacks suggest that neither side is limiting its military campaign to conventional battlefield targets. Russia has repeatedly used drones and missiles against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Ukraine has expanded its attacks on Russian energy and military facilities.<\/p>\n
The geographic reach of the strikes is also becoming more significant. The attack on Tatarstan, hundreds of kilometres from the Ukrainian border, shows that Ukrainian drones can threaten important industrial centres deep inside Russia.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Russian attacks continue to cause casualties in Ukrainian communities near the front. A woman was also reported killed in a Ukrainian attack in Russia’s border region of Belgorod.<\/p>\n
The pattern points to a conflict increasingly defined by long-range warfare, with drones allowing both sides to strike targets far from the front. For civilians, however, the distinction between military and civilian zones is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.<\/p>\n
As Russia and Ukraine expand their drone and artillery campaigns, the immediate battlefield is no longer the only measure of the war’s intensity.
