Ahead of winter, Russia has ramped up its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as it seeks to weaponise the cold. Since launching its full-scale invasion four years ago, Russia has sought to maximise the toll on civilians by denying them water, heating, and electricity during the winter months to increase pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept the Kremlin’s maximalist demands. <\/p>\n

Ahead of winter, Russia has ramped up its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as it seeks to weaponise the season.<\/p>\n

Russia struck Ukraine’s state-run oil and gas company Naftogaz 13 times over the past week and nearly 300 times since January, the company said on Monday.<\/p>\n

Separately, private Ukrainian mining and power company DTEK Group said that Russia struck one of its mines and killed 52-year-old man.<\/p>\n

These attacks are part of the strategy to use civilians’ misery as a leverage over the Ukrainian government. Since launching the full-scale invasion four years ago, Russia has sought to maximise the toll on civilians by denying them water, heating, and electricity during the winter months<\/a> to increase the pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept the Kremlin’s maximalist demands.<\/p>\n

Such deliberate attacks on essential services and civilian infrastructure can amount to war crimes, according to Red Cross.<\/p>\n

Lately, Russia has also sought to use attacks on the energy infrastructure and civilians to deflect that the pressure it is under from Ukraine drone strikes \u2014 Ukraine has been striking Russian oil and gas infrastructure, supply lines, warehouses, and manufacturing units across the country, taking several refineries offline for extended periods and forcing Russia to suspend energy exports to manage domestic requirements.<\/p>\n

These strikes have become particularly damaging lately as Ukraine has nearly run out of Patriot interceptors<\/a> and Russia has sought to utilise this vulnerability by pummelling Ukraine with missiles daily. Russian strikes have overwhelmingly struck non-military areas, including apartment buildings, to increase the suffering on the masses and pressure Zelenskyy into accepting President Vladimir Putin’s maximalist terms.<\/p>\n

According to the United Nations, Russia killed 437 civilians in Ukraine in July, up 70 per cent from the same month last year.<\/p>\n
