<\/p>\nA Russian missile attack has killed 10 people in a village in Ukraine’s north-eastern Kharkiv region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said, as he vowed that Kyiv would respond.<\/p>\n
There was no immediate comment from Russia on the attack, which also injured at least 18 people, according to the regional governor.<\/p>\n
“This morning, the Russians launched a brutal attack on a busy intersection in Pechenihy, Kharkiv region \u2014 a location with a post office and stores, surrounded only by residential buildings,” Mr Zelenskyy said on X.<\/p>\n
“We will definitely respond to this Russian strike,” he added.<\/p>\n
Reuters video from Pechenihy showed several covered bodies lying on the ground, burnt-out cars and damaged buildings.<\/p>\n
Russia has intensified its air attacks on Ukraine over the summer, trying to exploit its smaller neighbour’s critical shortage of interceptors capable of downing ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n
Cafe and post office among shops hit<\/p>\n
The United Nations said last week that civilian casualties from the war in Ukraine had risen by nearly a third month-on-month in July.<\/p>\n
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said on X it was gathering information about the attack in Pechenihy and its impact on civilians.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has also increased its attacks on Russia, targeting oil facilities and logistics infrastructure to try to undermine Moscow’s ability to wage war.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Moscow’s mayor said Ukraine had launched 620 drones at the Russian capital and surrounding areas, in one of Kyiv’s biggest air assaults on the region.<\/p>\n
Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians in their attacks.<\/p>\n
The strike on Pechenihy village injured at least 18 people and damaged 10 private buildings, a cafe, a post office, five stores and 15 cars, the governor of the surrounding region, Oleh Syniehubov, said on the Telegram messaging app.<\/p>\n
According to preliminary information, Russia used two small Banderol cruise missiles in the attack, the office of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General said.<\/p>\n
A local official told public broadcaster Suspilne that the strikes had hit the central part of the village, where the cafe, post office and shops are located.<\/p>\n
UK backs Ukraine after Russian threat<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the UK’s new prime minister is vowing the country will continue to support Ukraine “100 per cent”, after Russia’s embassy in the country threatened consequences over Kyiv’s use of British-made drones.<\/p>\n
British newspaper The Sunday Times earlier this week reported that two UK companies made drones used by Ukraine to hit Russia.<\/p>\n
Following the report, the Russian embassy in the UK said in a statement that “London’s actions will inevitably carry consequences”.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That led British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to publicly commit that the UK “stands 100 per cent behind Ukraine”.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the UK’s defence ministry has also weighed in, saying that: “Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, and we are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin’s illegal invasion.”<\/p>\n
