{"id":30356,"date":"2026-08-19T10:17:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/30356\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T10:17:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:17:05","slug":"defence-minister-sacked-by-zelensky-calls-for-elections-in-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/30356\/","title":{"rendered":"Defence minister sacked by Zelensky calls for elections in Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Fedorov\u2019s six-month tenure as defence chief was marked by a push to modernise Ukraine\u2019s armed forces through technology and reform military procurement in an attempt to address corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to remove him was followed by countrywide protests, but demonstrators\u2019 demands later shifted to calling for the dismissal of Oleksandr Syrskyi, the controversial army commander-in-chief with whom Mr Fedorov had clashed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky ceded to the public outcry on July 21, <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/07\/21\/zelensky-fires-head-army-after-protests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dismissing the 60-year-old general<\/a> \u2013 who had led the military since 2024 \u2013 but he refused to reinstate his reforming ex-defence minister, replacing him in an interim capacity with Maj Gen Khmara.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian parliament entered a month-long recess and reconvened on Tuesday, when Mr Zelensky told deputies he had formally nominated the SBU official as Mr Fedorov\u2019s successor. Deputies were due to vote on that nomination on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Although Mr Fedorov was dismissed more than a month ago, protests in his support have continued to gather pace this month.
