{"id":31171,"date":"2026-08-21T10:55:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T10:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/31171\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T10:55:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T10:55:06","slug":"russia-open-to-new-ideas-on-ukraine-peace-but-with-conditions-senior-diplomat-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/31171\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia open to new ideas on Ukraine peace, but with conditions, senior diplomat says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/REZO6WBOMVHUBMB4Z4ZZFJHSWI.JPG?auth=ec05aab043f9c6e2918aca62676d2d2ef41606054eb7ca780e9ed54f4edb93a5&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">People look at smoke rising in the city during a Russian drone strike, amid Russia&#8217;s attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Thursday.Oleksandr Ratushniak\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Russia is open to listening to new proposals on how to reach a settlement on the Ukraine conflict, a senior Russian diplomat said, but any proposals should reflect the \u201crealities on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with media outlet News.ru published on Friday that the U.S. demonstrated a readiness for \u201cconstructive dialogue\u201d and an \u201cunderstanding of Russia\u2019s position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAt this stage, it is more important to what extent Washington is able to influence the decisions of the Kyiv regime and its European sponsors, who still dream of a \u2019strategic defeat\u2019 of Russia,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Negotiations between Russia and the U.S. to bring about an end to the conflict in Ukraine have largely stalled amid the war in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Kremlin said on Thursday that it had no information yet on a possible next visit to Moscow by U.S. presidential envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who have led negotiations with Russia in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that Washington was committed to helping end the war, following a meeting in Manila with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-russian-ukraine-strikes-zelensky-patriot-interceptors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zelensky calls for Patriot interceptors as Russian strikes in Ukraine kill 17<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But Rubio cautioned there was no quick deal ahead and the U.S. was trying to \u201cfind a middle ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ryabkov said Russia was ready to listen to Rubio\u2019s new ideas and continue dialogue with Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe Russian Federation is ready to listen to any reasonable proposals and ideas that are in line with the goals set by the Russian president and meet the \u2019realities on the ground\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">After almost 4\u00bd years of war, Russia holds around a fifth of Ukraine\u2019s internationally recognized territory. Moscow has repeatedly said it is open to talks, but that these must recognize the \u201cnew realities on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In the interview, Ryabkov also suggested Russia was keen to maintain discussions with the U.S. on nuclear weapons.
