{"id":35555,"date":"2026-09-01T06:55:23","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T06:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/35555\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T06:55:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T06:55:23","slug":"putin-xi-reaffirm-russia-china-ties-amid-unpredictable-world-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ukraine\/35555\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin, Xi reaffirm Russia-China ties amid \u2018unpredictable\u2019 world | Conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The Russian and Chinese leaders met in Kyrgyzstan on the sidelines of the SCO summit, being attended by over a dozen heads of state.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 31 Aug 202631 Aug 2026<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have reaffirmed their strategic alliance amid growing global uncertainty, as they met on the sidelines of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/31\/xi-modi-and-putin-set-to-meet-for-sco-summit-whats-on-the-agenda\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shanghai Cooperation Organisation<\/a> (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n<p>In their first meeting since May, Xi told Putin on Monday that he was \u201chappy\u201d to meet again. He told the Russian leader, whose country is engaged in a fifth year of war on Ukraine, that bilateral ties between Beijing and Moscow have grown \u201cmore solid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>That should continue despite increased \u201cuncertainty and unpredictability in the international order,\u201d he added. China has consistently denied giving Russia material support for its assault on its neighbour.<\/p>\n<p>Xi told Putin that there are \u201ceven brighter\u201d prospects ahead for relations between Beijing and Moscow, although \u201cthe amount of uncertainty and unpredictability in the international order has obviously increased,\u201d Xi said.<\/p>\n<p>Putin agreed, saying that \u201ccooperation is successfully developing on all fronts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Shadows of war<\/p>\n<p>The two-day SCO summit in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, marks the 25th anniversary of the regional security and economic grouping.<\/p>\n<p>Over a dozen heads of state are attending, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a dialogue partner.<\/p>\n<p>The summit takes place four-and-a-half years into Moscow\u2019s Ukraine invasion and six months into the war between the United States and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Putin and Xi have previously used SCO summits to promote their vision of a multipolar world and present a united front against the West.<\/p>\n<p>Due to Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, Russia\u2019s economy has become increasingly dependent on China. That has seen Western countries call on Beijing to pressure Moscow to end its offensive.<\/p>\n<p>However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media that the two leaders largely discussed economic relations, and only talked on the Ukraine war \u201cin passing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Putin also met with Modi, with the leaders arriving in the same car for scheduled talks.<\/p>\n<p>Modi said New Delhi is ready to work for an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian leader said Moscow was \u201cfollowing the path\u201d towards a resolution, without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p>Peace talks, brokered by the United States, remain stalled. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/25\/kremlin-denies-planned-talks-with-us-envoys-amid-reports-cia-head-in-russia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports last week<\/a> said that CIA Director John Ratcliffe had visited the Russian capital for talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Path of agreement\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Putin is also expected to hold separate talks with Pezeshkian.<\/p>\n<p>Russia and Iran are among the most sanctioned states in the world and have deepened military and economic ties since Moscow invaded Ukraine. Iran has supplied drones for Russia\u2019s ongoing invasion.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump has warned Moscow and Beijing against arming Iran. US media speculated that as well as Ukraine, Ratcliffe sought to convey a warning to Russian counterparts that Moscow should refrain from supplying weapons to Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Bishkek after the first exchange of fire between the United States and Iran in a month, Iran\u2019s Pezeshkian said continuing the war was not in Tehran\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to strive for a path of agreement and understanding, and we believe that continuing the war is neither in our interest, nor in the interest of the region,\u201d he told India\u2019s Modi.<\/p>\n<p>Putin, Xi, Pezeshkian, Modi and Sharif are due to take part in a plenary session chaired by Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov.<\/p>\n<p>On top of the 10 members of SCO, the alliance now has 15 \u201cdialogue partners\u201d, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
