KYIV, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Russia attacked Ukraine’s port infrastructure and a border crossing with Romania in the southern Black Sea \u200cregion of Odesa overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian \u200cPresident Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the strike “deliberately damaged a border crossing point on the border \u200bwith Romania, as well as export infrastructure.”<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s emergency service said the attack had also targeted energy infrastructure and caused a fire at a residential building, where one person was hurt, without giving further details.<\/p>\n
In recent \u200cmonths, Russia has sharply \u2060increased both the number and intensity of its drone strikes on export infrastructure in the Odesa region, home \u2060to Ukraine’s main Black Sea ports as well as the major Danube river ports of Reni and Izmail.<\/p>\n
Russian attacks have effectively blocked the \u200bseaports, which \u200bonce handled 90% of the country’s \u200bexports, forcing Kyiv to divert \u200ccargo through Danube river ports with lower capacity and to railway crossings on the western border.<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian border service said on Tuesday that in the overnight strike, Russia had attacked and damaged a checkpoint for ferry services at Orlivka on the border with Romania.<\/p>\n
“Processing of \u200ccitizens and vehicles through this checkpoint \u200bhas been temporarily suspended,” the service said \u200bin a statement.<\/p>\n
The Odesa \u200bregion faced more than 300 air-raid alerts in August, \u200clasting a combined 238 hours, according \u200bto a monitoring \u200bservice.<\/p>\n
Railway officials say constant air-raid alerts and attacks on facilities are significantly complicating their operations.<\/p>\n
However, Ukrainian railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said \u200bit had increased grain \u200cdeliveries to the Danube’s ports for future exports.<\/p>\n
