KYIV, Sept 2 (Reuters) – Ukraine is finalising a drone deal with Germany, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy \u200csaid on Wednesday after a call with \u200cGerman Chancellor Friedrich Merz.<\/p>\n
The agreement \u2014 proposed by Ukraine several months ago \u2014 \u200bis expected to cover the joint development of various types of drones, missiles and related software.<\/p>\n
“Our teams are already finalising the text of the drone deal, \u200cand this will, among \u2060other things, definitely provide both Germany and Ukraine with additional defence capabilities,” Zelenskiy \u2060said on the Telegram app.<\/p>\n
The deal will build on existing German-Ukrainian defence cooperation, including a multi-million-euro programme \u200bto supply \u200bto Kyiv some 15,000 \u200bStrila interceptor drones designed \u200cto counter Shahed-type attack drones.<\/p>\n
In April, German defence technology company Quantum Systems and Ukrainian manufacturer WIY Drones announced the creation of Quantum WIY Industries, a joint venture focused on increasing production of interceptor drones \u200cand related air-defence technologies.<\/p>\n
Germany is \u200balso funding an order for \u200b50,000 Shrike attack drones \u200bproduced by Ukrainian manufacturer SkyFall, one \u200cof the largest known drone \u200bpurchases for \u200bKyiv by a Western government.<\/p>\n
In a post on X, Zelenskiy said he and Merz discussed the \u200bdrone agreement, new \u200cGerman air-defence support and plans for an \u200bin-person meeting.<\/p>\n
