Sept 8 (Reuters) – Ukraine’s prosecutor general said on Monday he had offered his resignation citing political reasons, in the latest \u200csign of disunity in the senior ranks of the \u200cUkrainian ruling elite.<\/p>\n
“This is a political decision, and I have made it consciously. \u200bI do not want the position of Prosecutor General to be used as an instrument of political confrontation,” Ruslan Kravchenko said in a statement on Telegram late on Monday, without elaborating.<\/p>\n
Kravchenko thanked President Volodymyr Zelenskiy \u200cand Ukraine’s parliament, \u2060the Verkhovna Rada, and asked them to accept his resignation.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s anti-graft agencies, the NABU and SAPO, said last \u2060week they had uncovered a criminal organisation dealing with fraudulent call centres which was allegedly arranged by an official within the Prosecutor General’s \u200bOffice.<\/p>\n
Kravchenko has \u200bdenied he was involved in \u200bthe alleged scheme. “My position regarding \u200cthe accusations remains unchanged,” he said in his Telegram post.<\/p>\n
Kravchenko’s resignation offer follows other changes among top officials in Ukraine as it continues to battle Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.<\/p>\n
In July, Zelenskiy endorsed the head of state energy company \u200cNaftogaz, Sergii Koretskyi, as Ukraine’s new prime \u200bminister, following the resignation of Yulia Svyrydenko.<\/p>\n
Svyrydenko’s \u200byear in office coincided \u200bwith a corruption scandal involving senior figures. Although \u200cshe was not implicated, critics said \u200bshe failed to \u200btake sufficient action to clean house.<\/p>\n
Zelenskiy also in July replaced popular Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov just six months after he had been \u200bappointed. Fedorov was \u200ca strong advocate for military reform but clashed with senior \u200bgenerals over strategy and procurement.<\/p>\n
