China warned the European Union on Wednesday against sanctioning its companies, after Brussels proposed a fresh wave of measures over Beijing\u2019s support for\u00a0Russia in its war with\u00a0Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s latest round of sanctions since Moscow\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine seeks, among other aims, to complicate commercial activities by companies in third countries that allegedly support the Russian military.<\/p>\n

The 27-member bloc has previously implemented measures<\/a> targeting Chinese firms for their alleged support for Russia\u2019s military industrial complex.<\/p>\n

The sanctions must be debated and unanimously approved by the EU\u2019s 27 member states to come into force.<\/p>\n

Officials told AFP the measures include adding 14 companies from mainland China and Hong Kong to a list of firms banned from buying EU goods.<\/p>\n

Asked about the proposed sanctions, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said<\/a> that Beijing \u201chas always firmly opposed illegal unilateral sanctions that lack basis in international law\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina has several times lodged serious representations with the European side, urging it to correct its wrong practices,\u201d Lin told a regular news conference.<\/p>\n

He warned that China will \u201cclosely follow\u201d developments and \u201ctake necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests\u201d, without providing further detail.<\/p>\n

Particularly sensitive is Moscow\u2019s drone technology, which has played a crucial role in the Russia-Ukraine war \u2014 now in its fifth year.<\/p>\n

Chinese firms dominate the global market for civilian drones, though a grey area for some products with potential military uses presents hurdles for enforcement of export controls.<\/p>\n

Beijing presents itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine war and says it is not sending lethal assistance to either side.<\/p>\n

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said<\/a> on social media Tuesday that \u201cbrick by brick, we are collapsing the foundations of Russia\u2019s war economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The latest package marks \u201cthe largest set of listings in over two years\u2026 notably on the financial sector, energy and drones\u2019 production\u201d, she wrote.<\/p>\n
