<\/a>UK announces more nuclear fuel for Ukraine at G7 talks<\/p>\n

Britain is set to supply more nuclear fuel to Ukraine in renewed support for the war-hit nation and also ramp up sanctions against Russia, prime minister Keir Starmer will announce at a meeting with G7 leaders in France today.<\/p>\n

As part of an effort to show support for Ukraine remains steadfast, the UK will now provide \u00a3210 million of UK Export Finance to power Ukraine’s nuclear plants for the next two years as part of a package which will enable UK-based Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power producer, Energoatom \u2013 which provides more than half of the country’s electricity.<\/p>\n

It was agreed last week at a meeting in Downing Street between Sir Keir and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n

The agreement also supports UK jobs and exports, the government said, with more than a third of the uranium content originating from Urenco’s processing plant in the North-West of England.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Zelensky says he is ready to meet Putin in the US<\/p>\n

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has offered to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin after he met with Donald Trump and European leaders at the G7 gathering in France yesterday.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday (Sunday), we discussed with President Trump that such a meeting could be organised in the US, in a format where Putin would find it much harder to refuse,\u201d Zelensky said in a video address posted on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will see what comes of it. If Russia refuses this chance as well, additional pressure will be needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Ukrainian official familiar with the matter said the Kremlin has not replied to Zelensky\u2019s proposal. The Kremlin has said repeatedly that if Zelensky wants to meet Putin, he can come to Moscow.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Zelensky said he offered to meet Putin during the G7, but that Moscow had \u201conce again demonstrated that it is not ready to speak about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Putin is wanted by the ICC on a warrant dating to March 2023 for alleged involvement in the abduction of children from Ukraine during the conflict. France would be obliged as an ICC member to arrest him. The United States and Russia both oppose the court.<\/p>\n

The head of Russia\u2019s central bank, Elvira Nabiullina, who warned president Vladimir Putin that she would exit the top role if he continues to escalate the war in Ukraine, has not been seen in public for almost three weeks.<\/p>\n

Nabiullina had been tasked with protecting the Russian economy at a time when it has invaded Ukraine and poured much of its resources into the war.<\/p>\n

The former Russian economy minister and a close adviser to the Kremlin has been in her position since 2013.<\/p>\n

She was last seen in public at the end of May, and reportedly missed the key economic forum in St Petersburg where Putin attempted to project financial stability and strength in his bid to shore up investments.<\/p>\n

Nabiullina also did not appear at a meeting chaired by Putin on inflation and interest rates.<\/p>\n

However, the Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rubbished reports of her being “missing” and said it is not a cause for \u201cconspiracy theories\u201d. \u201cPeople get sick sometimes,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

This was backed up by the central bank, which announced Nabiullina was on sick leave but will make an appearance at a press conference on 19 June following a Board of Directors meeting on Russia\u2019s monetary policy.<\/p>\n

<\/a>UK charges captain of Russian shadow fleet tanker with sanctions breach<\/p>\n

The captain of a Russian shadow fleet vessel intercepted by British commandos was charged with contravening sanctions, Britain’s National Crime Agency announced.<\/p>\n

Ajay Pant, an Indian \u2060national, was \u200bcharged \u2060with “directly or indirectly supplying or delivering by \u2060ship prohibited oil\/oil products from \u200bRussia \u2060to a third \u200ccountry…,” the agency said.<\/p>\n

Pant is set to \u200cappear at the \u200cSouthampton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, the agency added.<\/p>\n

British \u2060commandos on Sunday boarded and intercepted Smyrtos, a sanctioned Russian oil tanker sailing under a Cameroonian flag, in the English Channel. The \u200ctanker has been detained.<\/p>\n

The \u200bUK has \u200csanctioned almost 600 \u2060Russian shadow fleet vessels. \u2060Russia’s oil revenue helps fund \u200cits \u200bwar in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s foreign minister \u2060said the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a Unesco world heritage site<\/a> founded in 1051, was akin to bombing Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris.<\/p>\n

The Russian strikes came after Ukraine\u2019s president Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday he had discussed with US president Donald Trump efforts to secure an end to the conflict, ahead of a G7 meeting in France this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra set the Dormition Cathedral on fire \u2013 a church whose history dates back to the 11th century. And this is one of Russia\u2019s most serious crimes against Christian \u2060culture to date,\u201d Mr Zelensky said on X.<\/p>\n

The former US special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, has condemned the Russian attack on Kyiv\u2019s monastery and said it is like the bombing of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1940 by Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis attack tonight on the Monastery by the Russians in Kyiv makes no sense. It has a parallel with the bombing of London\u2019s St. Paul\u2019s in 1940 by the Germans. It won\u2019t work,\u201d Kellogg said on X.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cSomeone tell me the military necessity of the Russian attack. There is none.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia<\/a> of \u201cdeliberately\u201d targeting a historic cathedral, which is also a Unesco world heritage site.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been confirmed that two Russian drones deliberately targeted the part of the city where the Lavra and the Mystetskyi Arsenal are located,\u201d he wrote in a post on X on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs of now, 35 people are reported injured in Kyiv<\/a>. Across the country, 53 people have been wounded, and 11 people are known to have been killed in this massive Russian attack.\u201d<\/p>\n
