The death toll from a Russian bombing of an aid distribution point<\/a> in Ukraine\u2019s southeastern Zaporizhzhia <\/a>region on Monday has risen to 40, \u2060with dozens still missing, officials said, in one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.<\/p>\n

The attack came a day after a brief U.S.-brokered local ceasefire <\/a>expired and less than a week before the United States is due to bring together Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Abu Dhabi for talks on ending the war<\/a>, now in its fifth year.<\/p>\n

Reuters footage on Wednesday showed men in military fatigues loading bodies in white plastic bags into the back of a \u2060van in the village of Komyshuvakha, which was struck multiple times.<\/p>\n

Excavators were \u200bdigging \u2060up earth near a huge blast crater while rescue workers searched underground for bodies.<\/p>\n

Ivan Fedorov, the co-head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defense Council, wrote on Telegram that 59 people were missing.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> has said Russian forces first dropped aerial \u2060bombs on an underground school building being used as a distribution point as people arrived to collect aid, then struck the \u200bshelter with \u2060more bombs.<\/p>\n

Classes have long since been suspended at the \u200cschool because of its proximity to the front \u2014 Komyshuvakha lies some 11 miles from the nearest Russian positions \u2014 but it served as a shelter and handed out humanitarian aid every Monday, Zelenskyy said.<\/p>\n

Two members of a rescue crew and four police officers were among the \u200cdead, emergency services said.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s defense ministry said the attack targeted Ukrainian military units around \u200cKomyshuvakha and two other settlements, and that up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed.<\/p>\n

Russia and Ukraine both deny deliberately targeting civilians.<\/p>\n

Dramatic footage<\/p>\n

Bodycam footage from one of the policemen killed in the attack, which Ukrainian police posted and Reuters verified, shows rubble and badly damaged buildings in the aftermath of the initial aerial attacks.<\/p>\n

The policeman said the area was \u2060under threat from drones and appears to take shelter briefly inside the shell of a bombed-out building.<\/p>\n

Later in the footage, 15 to 20 people in civilian clothing are gathered outside the entrance to an underground shelter when a warning comes over a radio that Russian glide bombs are heading in the direction of the village.<\/p>\n

Residents rush down several flights of stairs and towards a room, while the policeman with the bodycam turns through a door into what appears to be a temporary police station.<\/p>\n

Three other men and a woman are visible in the final frames before there is a large explosion and the camera turns black.<\/p>\n

In a social media post accompanying the footage, the national police \u200csaid several strikes hit the area, including from a 3-ton FAB bomb, which is a large bomb fitted with \u200ba glide kit that allows it to fly long distances after being dropped from a Russian warplane.<\/p>\n

According to defense intelligence \u200cwebsites, a 3-ton glide bomb would carry around 1.4 tons of \u2060explosives.<\/p>\n

Fighting resumes after brief local ceasefire<\/p>\n

The strike occurred a day after a six-day ceasefire to evacuate civilians from the \u2060Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian town of Oleshky<\/a> expired.<\/p>\n

The truce, brokered by first lady Melania Trump<\/a>, allowed nearly 800 people to be evacuated, according to the first lady. Zelenskyy awarded Trump a state honour for her \u200brole.<\/p>\n
