The Pyle Westerman Youth Service Center works to remove non-academic obstacles Christian County High School students are facing, and on Monday, the organization received a grant from the South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council.
To start the council’s meeting, Executive Director Carter Hendricks presented the $1,000 grant. He says one of the council’s clients recently toured CCHS and were blown away by the students and the staff and the grant is a token of appreciation from the council.
CCHS Youth Service Center Coordinator Shawna Major says the consolidated student body has around double the needs, so the grant will come in handy. The center recently started its backpack program, which provides food to students over the weekend, and Major says the program already has 75 students.
Major says she is excited about the grant because it came at the perfect time. On Friday, she says they had to spend nearly $300 to include 20 more students in the program, and this grant will ensure that all 75 students receive food over the weekend.
Major says the grant will also help ensure that students in the program will have food through fall break.
