The restrooms and fishing pier at Pepper Park will close Monday for several weeks, as construction continues on improvements to the park.

Portable restrooms will be available for those who visit the park during the closure. The restrooms are scheduled to reopen Aug. 11. Signs near the pier will direct visitors to the next nearest fishing piers, according to the Port of San Diego.

NBC 7’s Joe Little is at Pepper Park where the Port of San Diego is planning to renovate the park.

The closures are in addition to the playground closure which began July 23. An additional closure of the green space in the northwest portion of the park will begin Aug. 15.

Once completed, the improvements at the redesigned 5.2-acre park will feature the first splash pad at a port park. It will also include a pirate-themed playground, a perched beach, overlook, hillside play area, picnic area, new entrance plaza and lighting and landscaping.

According to the port, the $8 million project is funded by a combination of port, federal and state funds, including $4.35 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and California’s Coronavirus Fiscal Recovery Fund, along with a $250,000 donation from port tenant Austal USA.

The boat launch ramp remains open throughout the construction process. Pepper Park is scheduled to reopen in early 2026.

“A future 2.5-acre expansion of the park is planned when more funding is available and other approvals are completed,” according to a port statement. “Future improvements to the extended park include a new nature play area, an expanded waterfront promenade, larger picnic and lawn areas, expanded parking, a plaza, and more.”
